Along with our Institutional Member partner Abt Associates, we are excited to welcome student researchers to our half-day forum Career Pathways: What We Know and Where We Should Go from Here next Wednesday. Many of you conduct research on economic inequality as it relates to workforce training and support, so we expect you'll find the Washington, DC forum rich with opportunities to exchange ideas with leaders from institutions such as MDRC, the University of Pennsylvania, and of course, Abt Associates.

Over the course of four hours at the American College of Cardiology's Conference Center at Heart (DuPont Circle, Washington, DC), we'll discuss evaluation research from Health Professional Opportunity Grants and Pathways to Advancing Careers Education, among other programs. We'll also take a look at the implications of impact findings for future research and policy, and consider the role that research developing at universities could have on that future. Student insights will be more than welcomed at this public forum.

Four Days, Two Coasts, and One Mission: To Give Voice to the Next Great Generation of Policy Researchers

Student researchers from all over the U.S. and abroad found their research receiving some well-deserved exposure at our Regional Student Conferences in Washington, DC and Irvine, California over the last several weeks. However, that was only the primary benefit of participating for many of them. Taylor Odle , a presenter in our Higher Education Access and Finance session, seemed to speak for many others when he Tweeted that "APPAM_DC knows how to throw a conference for grad students! Affordable registration, great free food, cocktails, and (unique) a dedication to publicizing the work of new and early career scholars! Others, take note. Thanks for an amazing #appam19dc - see you next year!"

APPAM Student Awards Watch:

Equity and Inclusion Fellowship Applications Will Be Accepted through May 31st

Prefacing that they'd love to stay involved in APPAM, a number of the participants in our Regional Student Conferences cited financial impediments to attending our future events. We want to make sure they (and all of our student members) know about our Equity and Inclusion Fellowship. This premier fellowship supports the travel, participation and recognition of up to 40 graduate students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds at our 2019 Fall Research Conference . Programming exclusively for the fellows at the conference also enables them to network with one another and APPAM's leadership. It's a great opportunity.

All students can apply for this fellowship using our online application through May 31st.

New Opportunities from APPAM:

#2019APPAM Preconference Workshop and Communities Proposals Welcomed!

We are now seeking proposals for our Preconference Workshop at the Fall Research Conference in Denver. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Denver Sheraton Hotel from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. All APPAM Student Members are encouraged to ask their institutions to submit a workshop proposal on an emerging policy area or topic of interest such as methodology, management topics, or timely research. In addition to the Preconference Workshop opportunity, APPAM is announcing an initiative to promote community building and networking at the 2019 Fall Research Conference: APPAM Communities is a new program that will support opportunities for any group of people to meet at the annual Fall Research Conference to talk about the topics that are most important to them. These get-togethers may focus on any number of shared interests or experiences, including, but not limited to, the following: race, ethnicity, gender, geographical location, methodology, or approach. This initiative builds on suggestions made by APPAM’s Diversity Committee, and other requests for additional networking opportunities in the context APPAM’s growth. JPAM Closer Look Author Interview:

Catalina Amuedo-Dorantes and Esther Arenas-Arroyo on Immigration Enforcement and Children's Living Arrangements

One of our observations from student presentations and proposals is that many of them are deeply concerned with immigration experiences, across countries and policy areas. We thought we'd address this common thread among our student members by introducing the new JPAM Closer Look Author Interview series, created by Michelle Slattery of JPAM, with an interview between Slattery and two experts in immigration policy: Catalina Amuedo-Dorantes and Esther Arenas-Arroyo.
