APPNA President's Message
Dear APPNA family,

It is with an immense feeling of gratitude and pride that I share with you the success of APPNA’s strategy meeting in the first week of February.

The hard work and diligence of the host committee were evident in every small detail. The meeting achieved all the goals, let it be academic, strategic planning, or entertainment. Personally most heartening for me was the enthusiasm, passion, and loyalty that was expressed by our members who are committed to a great future of our beloved organization.

I am also truly grateful to CABL committee, Council, and Board of directors who have ensured a smooth transfer of 2021 CABL bylaws. The overwhelmingly positive response from our membership regarding the new bylaws reflects the confidence of our membership in CABL 2021.

I am pleased to share the achievements, philanthropic work, and contributions of our members to APPNA in this newsletter.

I am truly looking forward to the APPNA Spring meeting in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the Omni Hotel from March 24th to March 27th, 2022. The very dynamic and dedicated host committee has worked tremendously to ensure a successful meeting. Hope you all will make your best effort to join us!

As always, our motto is APPNA first, and with your support, we will turn our dreams for APPNA into reality!

Proud Son of Pakistan
Dr. Muhammad Mansoor Mohiuddin
A very proud moment for APPNA, Pakistan and our community in North America. Our very own Dr. Mansoor Mohiuddin, Director of Cardiac Xenotransplant program at University of Maryland has successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into human. This will be a game changer in the field of organ transplant.

According to Dr. Mohiuddin, his hope is that if this procedure is successful, we will have access to organs that can be genetically modified and customized for the patients.

Dr. Mohiuddin is a graduate of DOW University of health sciences and is also the current President of DOGANA (DOW graduates association of North America). He is a leader at every front, let it be social and welfare work in North America or Pakistan, educating the next generation of physicians or being a game changer in the field of medicine.

APPNA is extremely proud of Dr. Mohiuddin accomplishments and we wish him the very best for his future endeavors.

APPNA Strategy Meeting 2022
A Success Story
APPNA Strategy Cruise Meeting 2022 was first meeting of the year, filled with learning and fun. It helped set the direction for APPNA 2022 with enthusiastic participation of 120 attendees. There were 8 focus groups moderated by Drs. Lubna Naeem, Jamil Mohsin, Aisf Mohiuddin, Muhammad Sanaullah, Nauman Ashraf, Sadiq Naveed, Humera Qamar and Haroon Duarrani. All of the moderators engaged participants, including past APPNA presidents Mubashar Rana, Sajid Chaudhary, Riaz Chaudhary, Arif Muslim and many others. Final discussion session was led by current APPNA leadership/BOD including Drs. Haroon Durrani, Asif Mohiuddin and Joseph Emmanuel. It highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of APPNA, concluding the meeting with a promising and upbeat outlook for APPNA in 2022 and beyond. 
 
Mr. Tahir Javed, a phenomenal Pakistani American entrepreneur, provided a non-physician perspective of our organization. He discussed business aspects of APPNA emphasizing tremendous potential for APPNA’s growth in future. 
 
The cruise was preceded by a high-quality CME session at Shingle Creek Hotel. CME Speakers Drs. Nauman Ashraf, Lubna Naeem, Abdul Ghani and Arif Muslim delivered insightful lectures on their respective topics. 
 
APPNA Talent Night Show on last night of the cruise was outstanding where multiple talents of APPNA family were on full display. The Talent night was lit up by superb poetry rendition by Javaid Akbar, Atif Qureshi, Shahid Rafiq, Shahid Ahsan; mesmerizing dance performances by Sarfaraz Ahmed, Raffat Ahmed, Ehtsham Haq & many others; melodious singing by Madiha Syed, Umair & Shazia Anwar, Khaula Akbar, Abdul Ghani, Sajid Mahmood, Masud Hashmi; and a special keyboard performance by Nauman Ashraf.
 
I am thankful to Drs. Jamil Mohsin and Sadiq Naveed for their outstanding support as my Co-Chairs. I want to offer special thanks to Tipu, Laiq and Nic for their diligent administrative help.
 
President Dr. Haroon Durrani deserves my sincere gratitude for his trust and confidence in me to organize and lead with full autonomy for this first APPNA meeting in 2022. This is first ever APPNA Strategy Meeting on a cruise in APPNA history of 45 years. The tremendous success of the meeting speaks volumes for Dr. Durrani’s vision and untiring work by the organizing committee. 
 
Focus group leaders and moderators will finalize their recommendations in coming weeks and present to the President & BOD for their review and implementation.
 
It was great honor for me to serve and volunteer for APPNA for a better and brighter future. I’ll always remain available whenever needed by APPNA.

APPNA Young Physicians Committee Update
With efforts of APPNA Young Physicians’ (CYP) Committee and Advocacy Committee, a new process for Statement of Need (SoN) is currently instituted. Dr. Muhammad Fateh Shahzad (President- KEMCAANA, Co-Chair - Advocacy and CYP Committees) has collaborated with Ministry of Health, Pakistan in achieving this endeavor.
 
With this process,
-Applicants will fill an online form and will send it to provided email with required documents.

-Once the application and required documents will be submitted, Ministry of Health shall issue SoN within 24 hours and upload directly on ECFMG site and email copy to the applicant.
 
Now the process of obtaining SoN will be completed within 24 hours compared to previous duration of 3-4 weeks. This new process will not only save time but would avoid back and forth travel to Islamabad. Moreover, it would help young physicians in joining residency programs on time without facing any stress of delays.
 
We appreciate the efforts of Dr. Faisal Sultan, SPAM on National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, and Dr. Abdul Baseer Khan Achakzai, Director - Health Programs and Regulations for streaming this process for our young physicians.

APPNA/ICNA Relief Efforts
-Friday, January 13, 2022
ICNA APPNA/Relief organized a free community health fair and Covid-19 vaccines distribution event at Makkah Masjid in Garland, TX.
Free health screenings services including blood pressure, blood sugar, Total Hemoglobin and BMI, were provided to the participants.

Covid-19 first, second and booster doses as well as kids vaccines to 5-11 yrs were provided by local Pharmacy CureRx.
Physician consultation was provided by Dr Zahra Ahmed.
Several participants with abnormal test results were referred to ICNA Relief free Medical clinic Dallas for further treatment and follow up.

Makkah Masjid President Br Ghulam Jangda, Faisal Malik from CureRx and local community members were very thankful to ICNA Relief & APPNA for providing free health screenings and Covid19 vaccines for kids, adults and elderly.

-Sunday, December 19, 2021
APPNA/ICNA Relief mobile clinic free community health fair was held at Islamic Association of Greater Memphis/Masjid At-Rahaman in Memphis, Tennessee A total of 20 participants received free health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, temp. check, A1C Testing and Physician Consultation.
It was a successful and eventful day, 3 Volunteers participated in this event.

The masjid’s Imam and board members and Participants were very thankful to ICNA Relief and APPNA for providing these valuable services for their community.

-Saturday, December 18, 2021
APPNA/ICNA Relief mobile clinic free community health fair was held at Islamic Center of Greensboro, North Carolina.
53 People received free health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, Temp check, HbA1C, Lipid Panel, and Physician Counseling.

On/site physician mobile clinic free community health fair was held at Islamic Center of Tennessee in Nashville,Tennessee.
24 participants received free health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, HgbA1C Testing and Physician Counseling.

7 Volunteers participated in this event including the physicians and a pharmacist.

-Saturday December 19th, 2021 and January 9th, 2022
APPNA/ICNA Relief organized 2 free community health fairs and Covid19 vaccines distribution events at Raindrop Turkish center in Richardson, TX.
Free health screenings services including blood pressure, blood sugar, Lipid panel and BMI, were provided to the participants.
Covid vaccine first, second, booster doses as well as kids vaccines to 5-11 yrs were provided by local Pharmacy CureRx.
170 Covid19 vaccines and 49 free Covid19 PCR testing were provided.
Physician consultation was provided by Dr Khalid Syed.
Several participants with abnormal test results were referred to ICNA Relief free Medical clinic Dallas for further treatment and follow up.
Raindrop Turkish center Presdint Huseyin Peker, Faisal Malik from CureRx and local community members were very thankful to ICNA Relief & APPNA for providing free health screenings, Covid19 testing and Covid19 vaccines for kids, adults and elderly.

Appna (associations of physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America) in partnership with Alkhidmat foundation established a residential room for girls at Aghosh Sheikhupura, Pakistan.
During the year 2021, APPNA in collaboration with Alkhidmat established a residential room for girls at Aghosh, Sheikhupura, Pakistan.

It will be providing residence for 8 Girls, who will live here with security and safety and will learn educational, social and vocational skills in School and in computer lab that will help them to become more productive members of Pakistan and the Whole World.

It was sponsored by Dr. M.Rizwan Khalid (Immediate past president APPNA), funds matched by APPNA and construction supervised by Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan.

Appna Continue Serving Our Communities, Providing Winter Clothing Packs to Deserving Families in Various Areas of Pakistan.
From December 30, 2021 to January 2, 2022 APPNA provided winter Clothing to 1738 people in various areas of Pakistan.
Thursday December 30, 2021, winter clothing packs provided to 240 individuals (Widows, day labourer’s kids) at Yazdani Road Factory area, Harbanspura, Lahore.

Friday December 31, 2021, Winter clothing packs provided to 200 individuals at Bhatta Haji Sohan Din, Kasur.

Sunday January 2, 2022, winter clothing packs provided to 440 individuals in areas of Jhelum Valley Azad Kashmir as below.
1. Refugee Camp 150 packs.
2. SOS Children Village Muzzafarabad 50 packs.
3. Slum Area of MZD 54 packs.
4. Madrasah Masjid 142 packs.
5. Garhi Dupatta town 20 packs.
6. Govt Girls School 24 packs.
