The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is proud to announce the “Paint the Music and Dance the Paint”, an exhibition of contemporary Cuban Art, curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez. Opening night was Thursday, February 8th from 5:00 till 7:00 pm at the Historic Gato Building. This collective exhibition represents the artwork of more than 25 established Cuban artists. Refreshments will be served, and free parking is available.
This exhibition of contemporary Cuban art presents the opportunity to bring together great established artists who inspire and have inspired artists for decades. With over 60 original works of art on display, many different styles of the Cuban school of arts will be on view. From drawing and painting to sculpture, each piece tells a story of beauty, love, passion, despair: the stories of human existence. The exhibit is part of the Arts Council’s Art in Public Buildings program, designed to offer an opportunity for artists to exhibit their work beyond a traditional gallery space and enhance the environment of those who work and visit the Gato Building. The show will continue through May 1st, and the Gato Building is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m. Closed Saturdays, Sundays, and Federal Holidays
This exhibit was sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the State of Florida: Division of Cultural Affairs, as well as other supporters. Additional support comes from donations by show visitors. For more information, please call the Arts Council at 305-295-4369 or email director@keysarts.com

Born in southern West Virginia and largely self-taught, rising phenom John Black currently paints from a studio program atop the World Trade Center with panoramic views of Manhattan. With the rigor of Gerhard Richter and the perspective of a young Black man in America, his charged, abstract artworks have developed into a coded language that relays energy and emotion as a way to connect the self with ancestral energy.

A MESSAGE FROM ARTIST AND WINE EXPERT ANNA SWEET
Dear Friends & Collectors,
If you’ve followed me for the past decade, you know it’s been a wild ride: art, innovation, galleries, wine, and even some magic.
I knew nothing about wine 4 years ago. I started a curiosity in Key West that led me down a path of taking multiple (pricey) Sommelier level courses, farming a vineyard for a year with my husband, working several harvests with world-renowned winemakers, and eventually purchasing and developing 10 acres in the Willamette Valley alongside my husband Steve.
Overcoming Wine Intimidation
As someone who has gone from wine world wannabe to Oregon Wine Press’s CoverGirl, I know the intimidation the wine world can bring.
I recently created an educational wine club, SNOOT, to elevate and educate the palate quicker and for much less money.
With the help of my winemaker and Master of Wine Bree Stock, I have gained access to high-quality, small-production wines that I can use as a vehicle to educate the everyday wine lover and bring clarity to the daunting topic of wine.

Guild Hall in the Hamptons Long Island New York opened in 1931, as one of the first multidisciplinary centers in the country, with a major celebration that included the inauguration of the Moran Gallery named for painter Thomas Moran, and the Woodhouse Gallery named for founder Mary Woodhouse. Early exhibitions focused on the artists and history of the region.
Among its many firsts, Guild Hall began exhibiting photography as a fine art in the 1930s, anticipating the medium’s later acceptance into the wider canon of art history. Guild Hall also mounted early exhibitions of Abstract Expressionism—for example, Jackson Pollock had work hanging in the galleries at the moment of his breakthrough magazine spread in August 1949.
In 1973, Guild Hall was among the earliest institutions in the United States to receive formal accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. Of the 35,000 museums nationwide, Guild Hall is still one of approximately 1,000 to hold this distinction.
Guild Hall’s reason for being was prompted by its surrounding artists’ colony. Dating back to the 1870s, esteemed painters such as Winslow Homer and Thomas Moran established studios in East Hampton, followed by many others. After World War II, Surrealist émigrés Salvador Dali and Max Ernst found refuge on the East End. Creative pilgrimage continued with Abstract Expressionist artists Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Jim Dine, and Neo-Expressionist artists Eric Fischl, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel. Today, contemporary artists like April Gornik, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, and Taryn Simon live in the region and participate in Guild Hall as a communal art space.
Guild Hall continues to embrace the influx of artists who are drawn to the region because of its history as a fulcrum of the art world. From this creative confluence, the curatorial staff formulates ongoing exhibitions that contribute significantly to art scholarship.
Annually, the Guild Hall mounts eight to ten exhibitions, ranging from the historical to the contemporary, and focusing on artists who have an affiliation with the Hamptons.
Guild Hall’s Permanent Collection houses 2,400 works of art, with an emphasis on the 20th and 21st centuries in all mediums, from painting, sculpture and photography to video, and installation art by artists of the region.

EYW Airport News
Record February Bump Consistent With Q1 Expectations
Passenger numbers at Key West International Airport for the month of February are 19.8 percent higher than the same month last year, and 17.8 percent higher than the year-to-date numbers of 2023. The passenger count is a record high for the month of February at EYW.
Numbers show 24,140 more passengers used the airport over the same month in 2023, bringing the total for the month to 145,957 combined enplanements/deplanements.
The numbers are consistent with airport Executive Director Richard Strickland’s recent report to the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners regarding airline seat capacity increasing 20.8 percent in the first quarter of the year.
For the month, United Airlines accounted for the majority of seat growth as it operates mainline 737-700 aircraft in Key West for the first time to Newark, Washington, Chicago and Houston.
🚩Important Reminder: With spring break underway, passenger traffic is at its peak in the Florida Keys, especially at the airport. Travelers are reminded to build extra time into their travel itineraries.
EYW has direct service to 21 popular destinations among its six airlines. For a complete list, visit https://eyw.com/airlines.

EYW Sponsors Special Olympics Florida, Local Games
Big Pine Key, Fla. - Key West International Airport is a proud sponsor and supporter of Special Olympics Florida and was on site Thursday, March 14, to cheer on athletes competing in the 2024 Unified Championship Schools soccer games at Big Pine Key Community Park.
A $3,000 sponsorship check was presented to organizers and volunteers. The sponsorship is part of the airport’s community marketing program fostering goodwill throughout the Florida Keys with airport revenue funds. At Special Olympics Florida, the funds will be used where there is a need for athletic programs or lack of funding.
“We thank the Key West International Airport for their generosity to our local athletes in the Florida Keys. We are truly appreciative,” said Sports Training & Competition Manager Ruth Coleman.
Cheerleading teams from Key Largo School and Coral Shores High School made their debut at the 2024 Unified Championship Schools Soccer Games Opening Ceremony. Four soccer teams competed, with the Horace O’Bryant Buccaneers finishing in first place for the Junior Division in a matchup with the Key Largo School Tornadoes. A round robin with a mixed division between the Gerald Adams Dolphins, Marathon Fins and HOB Bucs ended in ties and shoot outs.
EYW congratulates all Olympians for their participation in the 2024 Unified Championship Schools events and aims to assist neighboring communities through support of these programs.

The Papers, A Musical Staged Reading
Book, Music & Lyrics by Rob Baumgartner, Jr. and Nathan Dame
Starring Debra Barsha, Zach Franchini, Belle Jampol, Lauren Thompson and John Swann
Obsession, manipulation, and the moral implications of pursuing artistic legacy at any cost.
The Papers, a Musical, is a reimagining of Henry James’ classic novella, The Aspern Papers, set against the backdrop of contemporary Key West. Never more relevant than in our current times, The Studios is proud to bring this adaptation to life in a staged reading.
An ambitious Jewish academic from New York travels to the island to unearth the papers of Jeffrey Aspern, a forgotten gay literary artist from the 1950s and ‘60s. Uncertain of the papers’ contents, he stakes his entire future and scholarly reputation on being the first to uncover and interpret them. When his research brings to light shocking revelations about Aspern’s life and character, the scholar is forced to grapple with his own notions of morality, creative genius, and legacy.
More than just a riveting musical with a splash of mystery, this piece asks how we contend with the art and accomplishments of flawed people. How do we appreciate the achievements of heroes who may also be villains?

An Introduction to Academic Drawing
with Samuel Alvarez
THURSDAY & FRIDAY, APRIL 18 & 19, 10AM-2PM
KAT IN THE HAT CLASSROOM
$185, $170 mbrs.
Learn a structured method and approach to drawing with more confidence! Alvarez leads a workshop for beginners to advance students, focusing on academic techniques designed to help with the development of more precise drawing skills. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained a solid understanding of drawing principles and essential techniques for achieving accuracy in their drawing practice. Hands-on exercises and demonstrations help practice sight-size and comparative techniques, with instructor feedback to gain a better insight. Whether drawing as a hobby or aspiring to further their artistic pursuits, students will leave equipped with new and valuable skills for their journey in the art world.
Samuel Alvarez (b. 1997) has always had a passion for art and when he went on a trip to London he discovered the paintings of John Waterhouse and Arthur Hacker, painters who blended the fine arts with illustrative storytelling. He then decided to study classical painting at the Barcelona Academy of Art where he learned the techniques and methods of the old masters. After finishing the academy, Samuel has divided his time between the Keys and Europe, studying and developing his vision of reality, merging illustration, figure and landscape into one.

We are pleased to offer a rare 3rd State
Stereo Edition ' Butcher ' Cover set-up!
BEATLES 1966 YESTERDAY AND TODAY BUTCHER COVER
Original rare used third state (peeled) Stereo Edition
Yesterday and Today album cover and vinyl in
good-very good condition.
Archival framed with a copy of the Capitol Records Recall Letter to make a showcase piece for any collection.
Note: the original owner of the album wrote his
name ' Frick ' in small letters in the upper left corner
of the album cover and on the vinyl label.
The front peeled side has one very tiny area of remaining cover on Paul McCartney's upper
left sleeve.
Measures approx. 38 3/4" x 21" framed in black lacquer with linen matte and gold filet.
Gallery price $6,295.
Yesterday and Today is remembered primarily for the controversy surrounding its original cover image. Known as the 'butcher cover ', it was taken by photographer Robert Whitaker and shows the band dressed in white coats and covered with decapitated baby dolls and pieces of raw meat. Although the photo was intended to be part of a larger work critiquing the adulation afforded the Beatles, the band members insisted it was a statement against the Vietnam War. Others interpreted it as the Beatles protesting the record company's policy of
‘ butchering ’ their albums for the North American market. In response to retailers' concern over the gory subject matter, Capitol immediately withdrew the LP and replaced the cover image with a shot of the band posed around a ‘ steamer trunk ’.
The album's title plays on that of the song ‘ Yesterday ’. The original LP is a highly prized item among collectors. Since some of Capitol's pressing plants merely pasted the trunk image onto the existing LP covers, the album also encouraged a phenomenon of stripping back the top layer of artwork in the search for a banned butcher cover.
Please call me at 305.294.8925 or email me at James@zazooartgallery.com to order your
' Butcher ' Yesterday and Today album cover and vinyl set-up today.

The Garden is faced with several significant capital projects. The education building and staff offices are on their last legs; ceiling leaks and holes in the floors need repaired and replaced. Restroom facilities close to the Nature Chapel are in demand. And, we must find ways to protect and enhance our historic Cuban Chug collection. While some of these items can partially be covered by grants, the need for a major capital fund campaign is clear. Executive Director MISHA McRAE Click Here for Newsletters

Hugh Syme internationally-renowned art director / traditional and digital illustrator /graphic artist / painter from Canada.
Chances are very high that you’ve seen one of his artworks somewhere, or one of the millions that even own one yourself! Hundreds of record-covers for world-famous acts like Aerosmith (Get a Grip), Celine Dion (Unison), Bon Jovi (New Jersey), Alice Cooper (A Fistful of...), Iron Maiden (The X Factor), Kiss (Revenge), Rush (all since 1975) or Whitesnake (Serpens Albus 1987‚ Slip of the Tongue‚ Restless Heart) originated from him. And then there is his commercial artwork and motifs for international brands such as Audi, Apple’s iPod, Disney, Sea World, Bacardi, Coca Cola, Jaguar, Maserati, Porsche, Tesla, Johnnie Walker, Patron, Boston Beer, as well as editorials for Forbes Magazine and Co. This imaginative artist is an awarded man of many talents – graphic designer, (digital) illustrator, photorealistic painter, pianist/keyboardist, composer, arranger.
Thanks to all of these abilities he creates extraordinary visuals that often bridge the gap between the present and the future, the real and the surreal, the music and the visual. The very busy man’s fanciful output fulfills the industry’s requirements: timeless/modern outstanding eye-catchers – sometimes even including a very special twist that’s discovered on second sight or closer look only!

But we can only know part of the story by appreciating them; That makes the art even more intriguing. The exhibition brings together more than 25 Cuban artists and more than 60 original works of art. This Exhibition is at at The Council of the Florida Keys Building GATO 1100 Simonton Street. This April 1, 2024 has many of the Art Items that is Curated from Guest Latin American / Cuban Curator ALAEN LEDESMAN FERNANDEZ .

Monroe County Mayor Holly Raschein and Key West Mayor Teri Johnston were invited to be guest lecturers for Dr. Penwell's Capstone class at the College of the Florida Keys.
Mayor Raschein and Mayor Johnston were joined by CFK President, Jonathan Gueverra for a 2-hour lively discussion on leadership and politics.
"What I hope we were able to convey to the students was the unique way that Florida Keys Mayor's work together in a bi-partisan manner to get the job done," said Mayor Johnston.
ss 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission, during a recent meeting, proclaimed April Conch Republic Month.
Mayor Emeritus Dennis Wardlow and community leaders, in 1982, defied a state roadblock by declaring independence and establishing the Conch Republic.
Now an annual celebration of Key West's feisty past, the Conch Republic is founded upon a very real issue. In March of 1982, the federal government placed a border patrol roadblock in Florida City. The resulting traffic backup - and the backlash on the city's budding tourist industry - drove local leaders to challenge the roadblock in federal court. The City lost.
The end result of the court hearing, according to Mayor Emeritus Wardlow, "is that we lost. So we said, if they're going to treat us as a foreign country, we're going to be a foreign country."
The next day, Key West seceded from the union.
After a mock battle, local leaders surrendered, then demanded foreign aid, which is still pending.
Local business owner Jim Gilleran serves as the Secretary of State for the Conch Republic. He notes that Conch Republic Days has become a major festival in the city. He notes, too, that members of the Conch Republic military practice frivolity and peace and do their share of volunteering in the community.
The independence celebration known as Conch Republic Days runs from April 19th through the 29th. During those ten days, there is a plethora of events including bed races and the infamous battle at sea in which combatants fire stale Cuban bread, conch fritters, and water balloons at one another. The recreation of the Great Battle of the Conch Republic is not to be missed!

Volunteers Roberta DePiero and Brian Fields gave a presentation to the City Commission last week, updating the amazing achievements of the weekly volunteer "ploggers" who gather in a new spot every Friday morning to pick up trash for an hour.
Brian Fields started the plogging program more than seven years ago after participating in Class 30 of the Key West Ambassadors Academy. Mayor Teri Johnston embraced the program within her Keep Key West Beautiful initiative, and the rest is history.
"Key West has set an example," said Fields. "People spend time here and take the program back to their own cities and towns. They come to here visit and they help keep Key West clean."
Over the past year, the ploggers have found different business sponsors who provide snacks and beverages for the volunteers.
The group presented the commission with a brief video, then the City of Key West surprised the group with a plaque commending the achievements of the volunteers in 2023. The plaque commemorates 1,765 volunteers, 9,242 pounds of trash picked up, 1,097 pounds of recycling reclaimed, and 171 gallons of cigarette butts, which get sent to a company called TetraCycle to be recycled into artificial wood for decking.

Recently the Key West Fire Academy conducted fire extinguisher training at Station 3. The Key West High School students gained valuable insights into fire safety practices and procedures.
The training covered topics such as the different types of fires, appropriate fire extinguisher usage, and handling techniques in emergency situations. It was a hands-on experience where the students had the opportunity to practice using fire extinguishers in simulated fire scenarios. The instructors provided detailed instructions on the proper use of extinguishers, emphasizing the importance of quick and effective action in containing fires.
Retired Key West Fire Department Captain Hernández's generous donation of his time and multiple fire extinguishers enabled our students to receive hands-on training, enhancing their skills and readiness in fire emergency situations. His commitment to our training program is deeply appreciated, and his contribution will have a lasting impact on the development of our future firefighters.
The two-year fire academy trains future firefighters while they're attending their final two years of high school and provides them, upon completion, the equivalent training of a Certified Firefighter I, which puts them halfway through the training required to become a Key West Firefighter.

Dear Friend,
As part of The Studios of Key West family, you’re an important piece of the amazing community that has fueled our growth in leaps and bounds over the last several years. We’ve provided opportunities to thousands of visual artists, performers, and writers, showcasing them in our galleries, classrooms and on our stages, and welcoming them to Key West through our residency program. We believe in supporting creative people - and supporting everyone to live creatively - because we know it makes Key West a stronger and happier place to live.
This past past year, we renovated the historic Carriage Trade Inn, which we’ve renamed as the Peyton Evans Artists Residencies (PEAR) House. Close to 400 artists apply to the PEAR program from around the world each year, to spend a month in Key West creating new work. The first four just arrived - two from California, plus Mexico and Ukraine - and are getting settled in now!
Earlier this month, we held an opening and exhibition to benefit Womankind’s nonprofit health clinic. We had a true cross section of the island in attendance. MONORE COUNTY NAMES 2023 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR JANET GUNDERSON, SENIOR GRANTS COORDINATOR
MONROE COUNTY, FL – Congratulations to Monroe County Employee of the Year Janet Gunderson who was recognized at the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday. She started with the County in June 2016, and the Board of County Commissioners recognized her as the Employee of the Second Quarter in 2023. Chief Resilience Officer Rhonda Haag nominated Gunderson for the award, adding that she went above and beyond when the resilience office was overwhelmed with an unprecedented number of contracts, invoices, and grants in the department. She will also be a key staff member helping Haag plan the 16th Annual Southeast Florida Regional Climate Compact Summit Dec. 16-18, 2024 in Key West.
“Janet was able to step in and not only help process the tremendous workload but also fix outstanding financial issues,” said Haag. “Without Janet’s help, there would be fewer grants to the County, slower processing of millions of dollars in invoices, and potential late grant reports.”
In early 2023, Gunderson also fulfilled her job responsibilities in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), trained another person to take on her previous workload in OMB, and carried out the duties of both the OMB and Resilience departments. During late 2023, she also helped Legislative Affairs with Restore Act grant funding.
OMB Director Tina Boan echoed Haag’s comments, “Janet is a shining star who goes above and beyond daily. Besides learning a new position, she supports the Legislative Director with financial reporting for three Restore Act grants.”
Employee Services facilitates the Employee of the Quarter nominations. Monroe County’s Senior Management Team selects an Employee of the Quarter from a pool of employees nominated by their peers or supervisors and an Employee of the Year from the four winners. These employees are chosen for going above and beyond their work responsibilities while continually demonstrating Monroe County’s values.

TWO PUBLIC MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR HARRY HARRIS PARK RESILIENT REDESIGN REVIEW
TAVERNIER, FL – Monroe County will hold two public workshops for feedback on potential redesign efforts for the Harry Harris Park in Tavernier to make it more resilient and improve overall use. Harry Harris Park is a pet-friendly, oceanfront public park vulnerable to sea-level rise, storm events, and overall flood risk. The park’s amenities include two ball fields, a boat ramp, a playground, a beach area, restroom facilities, and Wilkinson Point. The park also has pavilions, barbecues, picnic tables, a basketball court, and a protected swimming area. This project aims to protect the park and enhance its resiliency and overall community benefit.
- Meeting #1 will be held on Tuesday, April 9, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Harry Harris Park Pavilion, 50 E Beach Rd, Tavernier.
- Meeting #2 will be held on Tuesday, April 30, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Murray E. Nelson Building, 102050 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo. A virtual link will also be available.
Monroe County staff has been working on design concepts to make the park more resilient following damage after Hurricane Irma in 2017. Several design concepts are being evaluated, such as:
- Rebuilding the swimming area jetty with engineered armor stone
- Replacing/improving revetments near the boat ramp and along Wilkinson Point
- Addition of a resilient boardwalk along the water’s edge
- Flood-proofing of new lighting or electrical systems added
- Replacing impervious surfaces with pervious or semi-pervious pavements
- Fortify the shoreline adjacent to the boat ramp and tie into the swimming area jetty and Wilkinson Point structures on either side
- Elevate structures upon the end of useful life or need for major repairs
- Extend and improve walkways on the north end of the park and provide play pods or exercise stations along improved walkways
- Additional trees and/or native vegetation planting areas
The community is invited to attend one or both of the public workshops to provide feedback on the design concepts the County has developed or bring new ideas,” said Monroe County Chief Resilience Officer Rhonda Haag. “We want to hear from the community about this critical project to protect and improve Harry Harris Park.”

COMMISSIONERS SUPPORT FWC IN FINDING OUT THE CAUSE OF RECENT FISH DEATHS AND ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR
FLORIDA KEYS, FL – The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners are in full support of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in its quest to find out the cause of the recent smalltooth sawfish deaths and spinning fish abnormalities happening in the Florida Keys.
“We know there is a lot of frustration in the community not knowing what is going on,” said Commissioner Michelle Lincoln. “We are all extremely concerned about our ecosystem and what is causing this to happen.”
FWC is working with stakeholders and nonprofits to investigate the abnormal behavior and sawfish deaths. Rep. Jim Mooney led the effort to secure $2 million in State funds this budget cycle for the FWC to determine the scale and scope of the ongoing fish mortality and disease event in Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay, and the Florida Keys. The FWC will contract with nonprofits to assist with data collection and analysis, and employ local fishing guides to assist with data collection.
“We are fully supporting our State scientists and experts in working as quickly as possible to discover what is happening,” said Mayor Holly Merrill Rashein.
What FWC knows so far:
- There have been 21 documented smalltooth sawfish deaths to date.
- Based on fish necropsy data to date, there are no signs of a communicable pathogen and specimens were negative for bacterial infection. Additional sawfish tissues are still being processed for analysis.
- Dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, and temperature are not suspected to be the cause of the fish behavior or kills.
-
To date, Red Tide toxins (brevetoxins) produced by Karenia brevis have not been detected in water samples.
- At this time, the cause of the abnormal behavior and mortalities is not known, and efforts to collect and analyze samples are ongoing.
How you can help:
Sawfish: Report all healthy, sick, injured or dead sawfish to FWC’s Sawfish Hotline at 844-472-9374 or via email at Sawfish@myfwc.com with the date, time and location of the encounter, estimated length, water depth and any other relevant details. Under the Endangered Species Act, it is illegal to catch, harm, harass, or kill an endangered sawfish. It is also unlawful to possess, sell, carry, or transport sawfish or parts of sawfish—such as the rostrum (snout). While some fishermen catch sawfish as bycatch, they can follow safe handling and release guidelines to quickly and safely release incidentally captured sawfish
Fish Concerns: If you see abnormal fish behavior, fish disease, and fish kills, submit a report to FWC’s Fish Kill Hotline either through the web form MyFWC.com/ReportFishKill or by phone 800-636-0511.

APPLICATION PERIOD FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT’S HURRICANE BUSINESS PLACARD EARLY REENTRY PROGRAM OPEN THROUGH APRIL 30
MONROE COUNTY, FL – The application period for Monroe County Emergency Management’s 2024 Business Placard Early Reentry Program is open through Tuesday, April 30, at 5 p.m. There will be no exceptions after this time to apply for the 2024 business placard. The program allows essential businesses and nonprofits based in Monroe County timely access to the Florida Keys to assist in restoring community lifelines more efficiently and timely.
Placards are only valid in the year they are issued. There is only one application form to fill out each year. Do not apply until you have read and compiled the required documentation described on the placard web page. A link to the application and program details are available at www.monroecountyem.com/placardprogram. Applications will be reviewed within 21 working days.
Each registered business is allowed to bring in only its essential personnel; it does not include friends and family of those workers. Entering the County under a State of Emergency using a placard grants access to an area that has not been deemed safe. Basic life support resources may not be available after a major event; those entering with a placard must be self-sufficient for 14 days with shelter, food, and water.
“Disaster response takes the effort of an entire community,” said Emergency Management Director Shannon Weiner. “Sharing your business’s skills and resources when needed most contributes to a swift recovery for all.”
--
Residents who wish to obtain or renew a Monroe County Early Reentry Placard for 2024 may do so through the Monroe County Emergency Reserve Corps at www.mercorps.org. Hurricane recovery courses are required for residents to receive the placard.
Reentry windshield stickers for residents can be picked up at Monroe County Tax Collector offices throughout the Florida Keys with proof of residency and vehicle registration. For more information and locations to obtain stickers, visit www.monroecountyem.com/reentrystickers.

COMMISSIONER CATES TOWN HALL MEETING REGARDING BOCA CHICA MOORING FIELD
STOCK ISLAND, FL — Monroe County Commissioner Craig Cates hosted a town hall meeting Wednesday on Stock Island to discuss the development of the Boca Chica Mooring Field. Residents and stakeholders interested in the future of Boca Chica Basin were encouraged to attend.
“This was a great opportunity to meet with the residents of Stock Island and present the positive impacts of the mooring field, the upland facilities, and address any concerns,” said Cates.
Community members were able to talk directly with Cates, Monroe County Marine Resources Senior Administrator Brittney Burtner, and other project planners and local officials about issues caused by long-term unmanaged anchoring, the benefits of managed mooring fields, the conceptual design of the mooring field and upland site, and the mooring field management plans.
To address boating impacts associated with unmanaged anchorages in the Florida Keys, Monroe County is working to develop and manage a system of public mooring fields, including the Boca Chica Mooring Field. The intent is to eliminate abandoned and derelict vessels, ensure compliance with the Clean Vessel Act, minimize benthic damage, and provide a safe, secure harbor for transient and long-term recreational vessels.
To learn more about the project or to view the town hall presentation, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov/marineresources under the “Anchoring and Mooring Management” tab.

THE KEYS CITIZEN DONATES ITS ARCHIVE TO THE MONROE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM’S FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY CENTER
KEY WEST, FL – The Keys Citizen donated large, bound volumes of its Key West Citizen and Florida Keys Keynoter archive to the Monroe County Public Library’s Florida Keys History Center (FKHC). The original newspapers date back to the 1920s. Due to downsizing, the Citizen could no longer store the papers. This was a result of a longstanding partnership between the Citizen and the library system to acquire these documents.
On Thursday, Monroe County Facilities Maintenance safely transported the collection to an offsite, climate-controlled facility until room can be made at the Key West library.
“This is a bedrock collection,” said Dr. Corey Malcom, Lead Historian for the FKHC. “It is the single richest source concerning modern Keys history there is.”
The FKHC has a comprehensive index of the newspaper and has the archives scanned onto microfilm, which will remain the primary means of accessing the back issues of the newspapers. But microfilm is nowhere near as good, especially for photographs. Once information is pinpointed in the microfilm, the original paper can be used for the best available copy.
“We are thrilled to add these documents to the Monroe County archive. People will be using them to understand Keys history for generations to come,” Malcom said.
The FKHC produces the “Today In Keys History” column that runs daily in the Citizen and is also available online at the library website keyslibraries.org and on Facebook at fb.com/keyshistory. More than 23,000 historical images can also be found at bit.ly/keyspix.

As sea turtle nesting season has officially concluded on Florida’s Southwest coast as of Oct. 31, Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation & Research Program (STCRP), which patrols 35-miles from Longboat Key to Venice of beaches each day of nesting season (May 1-Oct. 31) reports their findings for another record-breaking nesting season.
Throughout the season, STCRP recorded a total of 4,284 (compared to the current record of 5,112 in 2019) nests across all sea turtle species—4,091 loggerhead nests and 193 green nests. The program also documented the highest numbers of sea turtle nests specifically, the highest number of green turtle nests ever on Venice.
Even though Hurricane Idalia impacted beaches towards the end of the season, its impact on nesting was low with 75% of nests completing their incubation prior to the storm’s arrival. The majority of the remaining nests were washed out by the storm, however, sea turtles have a natural instinct to nest several times in one season offsetting natural events.
The success of recent nesting seasons could be a result of the long-standing program and local engagement, giving the next generation of sea turtles a better chance.
“Science-based sea turtle conservation is critical for maintaining endangered and threatened species populations,” said Dr. Michael P. Crosby, Mote President & CEO. “Mote translates and transfers the interwoven science of our Sea Turtle Conservation and Research program, Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital and Strandings Investigations Research program to protect and rehabilitate these animals and their habitats. An example of a highly visible outcome of our work is the recently established voluntary Sea Turtle Protection Zone for boaters in our local waters.”
Senior Biologist and Conservation Manager Melissa Macksey is thrilled to see these numbers continue to rise and is excited to see a growth in these sea turtle species populations. In particular, green sea turtle nesting numbers which have dramatically increased in the last decade. This species recovery in the Gulf of Mexico shows conservation efforts are working and should be maintained.
“This year’s total is the 5th highest overall since our program began 42 years ago,” said Mote Senior Biologist Melissa Macksey. “Over decades, we have learned and are still learning a great deal about the nesting behaviors of sea turtles individually and at the population level, impacts of human activity and animal predators, sea turtle population trends, and more.”
At night, STCRP staff have expanded tagging of nesting sea turtles to three beaches in Sarasota County: Siesta Key, Casey Key, and Venice. This year STCRP encountered the highest number of individuals (528) ever! Researchers identify unique turtles through flipper tags and use these data to answer questions about their behavior.
According to a recent study titled Forty years of monitoring increasing sea turtle relative abundance in the Gulf of Mexico in the scientific journal, Scientific Reports, Mote’s STCRP documented 133,957 sea turtle crawls from 1982 to 2021; 48.8% of these crawls resulted in nests (65,321). Of those, 99.0% (64,692) were laid by loggerheads. There were 608 green sea turtle nests, ten Kemp’s ridley nests, five leatherback nests and two known loggerhead/hawksbill hybrid nests. These findings can be used to determine how nesting counts and hatchling productions have changed over time and to quantify how nesting turtles on these beaches are contributing to the greater Gulf of Mexico marine turtle populations.
Mote’s STCRP contributes all of its data to a statewide cooperative effort to monitor sea turtle nesting, coordinated by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Open Call to Florida Keys Artists: “Shadow & Light” Juried Art Exhibition at the Key West Museum of Art & History
November 29, 2023 – (KEY WEST, FL). The Key West Art & Historical Society announces a call for entries for its new juried exhibition which is slated to open in February 2024 at the Key West Museum of Art & History. “Shadow & Light” is open to all artists living and creating in the Florida Keys. The new exhibition beckons artists to immerse themselves in the outdoors, capturing natural light and its interaction with everyday objects into visual expressions that evoke contemplation, wonder, and introspection. Juried by Dr. Cori Convertito of the Key West Art & Historical Society, Martha Resk from the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Emma Starr of The Armory Studios, and Elena Devers of The Studios of Key West, the submission platform opens on December 1, 2023, and closes on January 22, 2024. There will be a special opening reception for the artists and the public on February 23, with the show running from that date through April 16.
The Society’s goal with this exhibition is to invite artists to create artwork that expresses ideas about the natural world and to venture into the intricate interplay between the elemental forces of nature and the ever-changing light of the Florida Keys. The museum is seeking submissions of original artwork that captures the essence of “Shadow & Light” in the broadest sense that include a range of mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, encaustic, pencil, sculpture, and mixed media.
“In art, shadow and light are fundamental to expressing three-dimensional form. When applied the correct way, shadow and light effects make a powerful storytelling tool,” says Cori Convertito, PhD, curator for the Society. “We seek artwork that represents the dynamics between these two simple, yet powerful, components. The exhibit is open to all visual artists throughout the Florida Keys working in any fine art or fine craft medium or technique, in two or three dimensions, representational, abstract, or non-representational.”
The submission fee for artists is $25, which will offset the cost of the opening reception. Only one submission per artist, with a deadline of January 22.
