Celebrate Service!
April is National Volunteer Month. It's the time of the year when we honor our volunteers and take the time to recognize their invaluable contributions to society.  Doing good comes in many forms and we recognize and celebrate them all. Volunteers lend their time, talents, and voices to make a difference. We celebrate the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle society's greatest challenges. Your good work builds stronger communities across Cape Cod and the Islands. Thank you for all that you do!

In The News
Welcome Maryanne Ryan!
Greetings,
My name is Maryann Ryan and I am the new Senior Corps RSVP Program Director. I am looking forward to meeting all of you over the next several months. I have worked in the field of older adults for over 28 years both in Elder Services and Senior Center network. My educational background is as a Social Worker, however my secondary love of plants led me to pursue a Certificate in Horticulture. I have been with the Cape Cod Master Gardner Association as a volunteer for almost 15 years. For many years I organized the Harwich Backyard Horticulture Community trainings and taught various classes.

I would like to take this opportunity to say "THANK YOU" to each and every one of you. Whether you volunteer through the Adults Benefiting Children (ABC) program, Senior Environment Corps (SEC) or Friends & Neighbors (FANS) program, I appreciate your strong commitment to improving Cape Cod and the Islands. Our community needs your help, so keep up the good work!

I want to be sure that you have a positive volunteer experience, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me, if I can help you. You can contact me by email at  Maryanne.ryan@escci.org  or by phone at 508-394-4630, x520.
Talk with you soon,

Maryanne

Earth Day - TLC for the Planet
The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in more than 190 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

Horseshoe Crabs: Ancient Beings

Horseshoe Crabs are living fossils that we can find along our coastlines, from Maine to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. They are nearly identical to their ancestors because of their exceptional ability to survive. However, what was once a thriving population is now dwindling at a rapid pace. Many factors play a role in the decrease of horseshoe crab abundance,  For the rest of the story and a volunteer opportunity monitoring horseshoe crabs, click here.
