Why buildings?

One example, public K-12 districts nationwide spend about $8 billion a year on energy bills. With a majority of us spending around 90% of our time indoors, buildings not only impact our planet, contributing to green house gas emissions (climate change) from their energy use, but buildings impact our health and well-being too.

Operations and maintenance of buildings can help improve energy efficiency to reduce a building's energy burden plus improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and protect public health!

Will you take the challenge?

The Clean Air in Buildings Challenge is call to action for building owners, operators, schools, higher education, and organizations and companies of all kinds to adopt key strategies to improve indoor air quality in their buildings.
More on energy policy and Buildings As Climate Solutions

City of St. Louis Building Energy Performance Standard (BEPS) compliance is here... and so is Be-Ex STL!

Building Energy Exchange St. Louis (Be-Ex STL) is the technical, financial and business development resource to help buildings over 50,000 sq. ft. get to net-zero, and achieve compliance with BEPS - improving building health, saving money, and positioning St. Louis as a resilient and carbon neutral region.

"If we can brand ourselves and remake ourselves as a sustainable city - we can really position St. Louis for the growth our community deserves...

tackling the energy usage of our buildings is the number one way we can do that,"

said Cara Spencer, BE-Ex STL Director on St. Louis on the Air, a few days before launching Building Energy Exchange St. Louis at the Missouri History Museum on March 23, 2022.

Benchmarking data reporting deadline is May 1, 2022

All municipal, institutional, commercial and multifamily buildings equal to or greater than 50,000 square feet will be required to report benchmarking data to the City of St. Louis on a yearly basis.

Properties must meet the weather-normalized site EUI standard set for their property type by May 4, 2025 (for 2024 calendar year benchmarking data). Qualified affordable housing buildings and houses of worship will have six years to meet the standard (May 4, 2027).

We recognize that we are a predominately white organization – our staff, our leadership, and our membership. As an organization, we recognize that we have unintentionally contributed to the status quo of injustice and systems that are racist. We know that environmental degradation and climate change disproportionately affect communities of color. We are working to do our part to address and breakdown systemic and institutional racism while understanding our own implicit biases. Learn more about our Equity and Inclusion Initiatives.
