The month of May is always a meaningful time in Aurora Public Schools. It marks the final stretch of the school year, when our students are preparing to walk across stages, families are celebrating milestones and staff are reflecting on the many moments that made this school year special.
It is also a time when we pause to honor those who help make these celebrations possible: our dedicated teachers. In APS, our teachers are barrier breakers who make learning come alive, build community in their classrooms and nurture a sense of lifelong wonder.
During National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9), we celebrate the power of teaching and the people who have chosen it as their calling. Our teachers are more than just educators; they are mentors, role models and advocates who meet students where they are and help them discover who they can become.

As a small token of our appreciation, APS is once again partnering with the Aurora Education Association to provide free breakfast burritos and sandwiches to every teacher across the district on Thursday, May 8.

All teachers can pick up breakfast in their school cafeteria between 7 and 9 a.m.

Teachers in the Division of Teaching and Learning can pick up breakfast at ESC 2 between 7 and 9 a.m.

Staff at our Child Development Centers can pick up breakfast at 9 a.m.
This is just a small token of our appreciation and I encourage everyone to take a moment this week to thank a teacher. Whether it is a handwritten note, a kind word or a simple smile, your gratitude can make a lasting impact.

Wellness Matters: Mental Health Month & National Nurses Week
As we head into the final weeks of the school year, the well-being of our students remains a top priority. May is Mental Health Month and May 6-12 is National Nurses Week, giving us an opportunity to recognize the incredible people who help care for our students’ emotional and physical needs.
In APS, we know that students cannot thrive academically unless they feel safe, valued and supported. Our counselors, psychologists, social workers and nurses are always there to notice when a student needs help and show up with empathy, resources and reassurance.
In addition to their clinical expertise, these teams help create safe and supportive learning environments by encouraging open conversations about mental and physical health. Their work fosters a culture where students feel empowered to speak up about their needs and seek help without fear or judgment. They are the calming voices during moments of distress, the gentle hands that care for injuries and the unwavering support system so many families rely on.
Please take a moment to thank the health professionals in your building. Their compassion creates a foundation of safety and care that allows every student to shape a successful future.

Each May, we observe Jewish American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultural heritage and lasting contributions of Jewish Americans throughout our nation’s history.
It is an opportunity to uplift Jewish voices, celebrate identity and deepen our collective commitment to inclusion, dignity and compassion. We also recognize that this observance comes during especially difficult times. In APS, we remain committed to fostering learning spaces where students and staff can engage in respectful dialogue, seek understanding and stand against antisemitism, Islamophobia and all forms of hate.
This month serves as a reminder that education is one of our most powerful tools for building empathy and bridging divides. To explore and share Jewish American history, please consider the following resources:

| | Celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month | | |
May is also Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honor the vast contributions, cultural traditions and enduring strength of AANHPI communities throughout history and across the country, including right here in APS.
This year’s national theme, “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience,” pays tribute to generations of AANHPI leaders whose courage and perseverance have opened doors for future generations. As the Federal Asian Pacific American Council celebrates 40 years of service in 2025, we reflect on the powerful stories of individuals who have risen above adversity and transformed challenges into lasting progress.
We are excited to honor leaders like Lieutenant Susan Ahn Cuddy, the first Korean American woman in the U.S. military, who defied anti-Asian sentiment during World War II. Congressman Dalip Singh Saund, the first person of Asian descent elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, fought for the rights of Indian and Filipino immigrants. Secretary Norman Mineta overcame the injustice of Japanese American internment to serve in the U.S. Army, Congress and multiple presidential cabinets.
Their stories remind us that resilience, leadership and the pursuit of equity are values woven into the AANHPI experience. Each step they took forward has inspired new generations to lead with confidence, challenge injustice and shape a better future.
We invite all APS staff to join a special celebration of AANHPI Heritage Month on Monday, May 12, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the APS Professional Learning and Conference Center (15771 E 1st Ave). The event will feature food from local AAPI restaurants, student performances, cultural showcases, prizes and more. Graduation season has arrived and we could not be more proud of the Class of 2025! This extraordinary group of students has led with determination, heart and vision. They have made their mark in classrooms, on stages, on athletic fields and through service to their schools and communities. Now, they are ready to take the next step toward shaping their futures.

Please know that the University of Denver has a no-bag policy in effect for all ceremonies. Attendees are expected to leave all bags at home unless medically necessary. Diaper bags and medical bags are allowed but must not exceed 12 in. x 6 in. x 12 in. All such bags will be visually screened upon entry.

There’s still time to sign up for the APS Leadership Institute (ALI), a unique opportunity for parents, business leaders and community members to gain a behind-the-scenes look at how Aurora Public Schools operates.
Through a series of engaging sessions, participants will:
- Learn about APS’ strategic plan, academic programming, operations, finances and governance
- Meet and engage with district leaders
- Find out how you can support Aurora Public Schools by volunteering or engaging in important leadership groups
The institute includes four insightful sessions that will require your attendance:

El mes de mayo siempre es un tiempo significativo en el Distrito de las Escuelas Públicas de Aurora. Marca la parte final del año escolar, cuando nuestros estudiantes se preparan para cruzar escenarios, las familias celebran logros importantes y el personal reflexiona sobre los muchos momentos que hicieron especial a este año escolar.
También es un momento para detenernos y honrar a quienes ayudan a hacer posibles estas celebraciones: nuestros maestros dedicados. En APS, nuestros maestros son innovadores que hacen que el aprendizaje cobre vida, construyen comunidad en sus salones de clase y fomentan un sentido de maravilla que dura toda la vida.

El bienestar importa: Mes de la Salud Mental y Semana Nacional de los Enfermeros
A medida que nos acercamos a las últimas semanas del año escolar, el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes sigue siendo una prioridad principal. Mayo es el Mes de la Salud Mental y el 6-12 de mayo es la Semana Nacional de los Enfermeros, dándonos la oportunidad para reconocer la gente increíble quien cuida a nuestros estudiantes y sus necesidades emocionales y físicas.
En APS, sabemos que los estudiantes no pueden prosperar académicamente a menos que se sientan seguros, valorados y apoyados. Nuestros consejeros, psicólogos, trabajadores sociales y enfermeras siempre están ahí para apoyar cuando un estudiante necesita ayuda y aparecen con empatía, recursos y tranquilidad.
Además de su experiencia clínica, estos equipos ayudan a crear entornos de aprendizaje seguros y de apoyo al fomentar conversaciones abiertas sobre la salud mental y física. Su trabajo fomenta una cultura donde los estudiantes se sienten empoderados para expresar sus necesidades y buscar ayuda sin miedo ni juicio. Ellos son las voces que calman durante momentos de angustia, las manos amables que cuidan las heridas y el sistema de apoyo inquebrantable del que tantas familias dependen.

Cada mayo, observamos el Mes de la Herencia Judío-Americana, un tiempo para honrar la rica herencia cultural y las contribuciones duraderas de los judíos estadounidenses a lo largo de la historia de nuestra nación.
Es una oportunidad para elevar las voces judías, celebrar la identidad y profundizar nuestro compromiso colectivo con la inclusión, la dignidad y la compasión. También reconocemos que esta celebración ocurre en momentos especialmente difíciles. El mes de mayo también es el Mes de la Herencia de los Asiático-americanos, Nativos Hawaianos y de los Isleños del Pacífico (AANHPI), un momento para reconocer y honrar las vastas contribuciones, tradiciones culturales y la fuerza perdurable de las comunidades AANHPI a lo largo de la historia y en todo el país, incluyendo aquí en Distrito de las Escuelas Públicas de Aurora.
El tema nacional de este año, “Un Legado de Liderazgo y Resiliencia”, rinde homenaje a generaciones de líderes AANHPI cuya valentía y perseverancia han abierto puertas para las generaciones futuras.
