He'll discuss the ruthless journalists, attorneys, and public intrigue that made Bodine’s case a milestone in the history of American tabloid justice. Drawing from his research at the New York State Archives, Hortis will offer insights into the case's relevance to our modern media landscape.

Each Online Speaker Series program is live via Zoom and offers a deeper exam into unique topics, connecting the past to our present and future. First Step to Freedom at City Hall

Through a partnership with the City of Kingston and SUNY New Paltz, "Sojourner Truth: First Step to Freedom" is on display at Kingston City Hall from Saturday, September 28, 2024 to August 2025.

The State Archives curated a document display at opening event of original 1828 court records that outline the story of Isabella Van Wagenen (aka Sojourner Truth) returning to Ulster County to secure the return of her 5-year old son, Peter, who had been illegally sold to a plantation in Alabama.

Created by renowned sculptor Trina Greene, the bronze statue of "Isabella" depicts her walking to freedom carrying her daughter, Sophia in 1826.

Archie the Jr! Archivist goes to Tarrytown!

After nearly 250 years, the original “boot papers” found on Major John André implicating Benedict Arnold as a spy during the Revolutionary War returned to Tarrytown for the very first time in September. Loaned by the New York State Archives, the rare papers were featured in an exhibit curated and produced by Revolutionary Westchester 250 (RW250) and hosted by The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Also featured was the State Museum's Fidelity Medal awarded by a grateful Congress to one of the militiamen, Issac Van Wart, and many other historical treasures contributed by partner organizations. Treason of the Blackest Dye exhibit runs through December.
