"Bless Their Hearts":
Giving our children stories of blessing that shape their identity

We're excited to have Carrie Nettles with us for ARBC In Formation on Wednesday, February 20. Carrie earned a BA in Sociology from Clemson University and an M.Div. from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. She has worked with the children's ministries of five different churches and as a child advocate with the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center in Charleston, SC. Carrie has traveled to General Theological Seminary to study with Jerome Berryman, specifically working on a theology of the child and the spirituality of the child. In 2015, Carrie returned upstate to complete a residency with the Spiritual Care department at Greenville Memorial Hospital where she worked across all units encountering various stages of trauma and recovery, specifically assigned to the pediatric psychiatric facility and children's hospital. Carrie is a candidate for endorsement with the Alliance of Baptists, and has entered the board certification process. She is a member of the Association of Professional Chaplains and the Pediatric Chaplains Network. In January of 2017, Carrie became the first staff chaplain in the nation serving a Child Advocacy Center. Together, she and her spouse, Mason, parent two children, Bret and Brigid, and herd a bunch of sheep.

Heart Trees
The week of Valentine’s Day is a natural time to talk about love. Love is important and powerful, so is prayer. As our church prepares to observe the season of Lent, the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, we would like to invite you to join us in a spiritual practice of prayer based on God’s commandment to love one another. There are so many ways that we can answer God’s call to show care, and prayer is one simple way to do so.

You might have already noticed that there are two white trees inside of our building that have hearts hanging on them. Each heart has a name of one of the 220 children and youth that are involved in our ministries here at ARBC (preschool, afterschool, and congregational). You can participate by taking one or more hearts and praying for that child by name each day during Lent. It is very likely that you will not know the child that you picked, but you can certainly still pray for them by name in an impactful way. It is our hope that each child will have someone not in their family actively praying for them each day. So, grab a heart and pray for a child. Let’s see what happens as parents, grandparents, church members, and teachers alike join together to fulfill God’s call to love.
