Native American Heritage Month at ARC | |
November marks Native American Heritage Month, a time to recognize tribal sovereignty and the endurance of tribal nations in their homelands. This month invites our campus community—faculty, staff, and students alike—to deepen our understanding of relationships with tribal nations, both local (Miwok, Maidu, Nisenan) and beyond, and reflect on the fact that the entirety of the United States sits on stolen land. Through events, lectures, and cultural programs, we honor the resilience and achievements of American Indian peoples fighting for rights, autonomy, and tribal justice in their traditional homelands. Please join us in authentic learning, connection, and community during this month.
Land Acknowledgment Statement:
We acknowledge the land which we occupy at American River College as the traditional home of the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok tribal nations. These sovereign people have been the caretakers of this land since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation the Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok continue as vibrant and resilient tribes and bands, both Federally recognized and unrecognized. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the generations that have gone before as well as the present-day Nisenan, Maidu, and Miwok people.
