Grant funding allows college to provide financial support for high-demand field

SUNY Adirondack is proud to offer extended support to students in the college’s Criminal Justice: Substance Abuse Services (CRSA) associate degree program.

The college last fall was awarded more than $115,000 from the State University of New York (SUNY) High Needs Localities Fund Allied Health Program to help students pursuing an associate degree in its state OASAS (Office of Addiction Services and Supports)-certified program.

That funding allows SUNY Adirondack to offer textbook support, gas cards, wraparound supports, career coaching, academic advising and payment of fees associated with CASAC-T (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Trainee) exams.

Over the past year, the college has expanded its practicum sites to include WAIT House, Adirondack Vets House and CAPTAINS.

"Our Substance Abuse Services majors have received $500 completion stipends, weekly gas cards, tutoring and textbook supports, all designed to remove barriers to their successful degree completion," said Diane Wildey, associate vice president for Academic Affairs. "I encourage anyone interested in substance abuse services education to contact the college for more information."

To qualify, those interested must be admitted to SUNY Adirondack and declare themselves a Criminal Justice: Substance Abuse Services major. The program is for new students, current students, students who are switching majors to Criminal Justice: Substance Abuse Services, or former students who wish to return and complete a degree.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for a substance abuse counselor in the United States in 2021 was $48,520 a year. Employment of counselors for substance abuse and other mental health care is projected to increase 22 percent through 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Social workers, the Labor statistics show, earned a median pay of $50,390 a year, with job growth projected at 9 percent through 2031.

To apply to SUNY Adirondack, visit sunyacc.edu/apply. To submit an interest form for the grant-funded support program, visit https://connect.sunyacc.edu/register/CRSA_interest.

Warren County Historical Society Presents History of the Schaefer Family and the Adirondacks

The Warren County Historical Society will present The Schaefer Family and the Adirondacks by Dr. James M. Schaefer at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. The presentation will take place in the WCNYHS museum at 50 Gurney Lane in Queensbury, NY, just off Exit 20 of the Northway.

The Schaefer brothers—Vincent, Paul and Carl loved the Adirondacks and were instrumental in the early days of “Forever Wild” environmental activism in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. Vincent, a self-taught chemist and meteorologist at General Electric, helped create Long Path of New York, North Creek Ski Bowl, and with wife Lois Perret, created one of the first ski patrols in the country. Carl, after learning of the first rope ski tow in Woodstock, VT, created one in North Creek. Paul served as a leader in the conservation movement in New York State as a member or founder of numerous organizations dedicated to preserving the wilderness including the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks. Learn more about the family’s Adirondack legacy from Vincent’s son, Dr. James M. Schaefer.

Dr. Schaefer was born and raised in Schenectady where he gained a lifelong appreciation of the environment and his surroundings—weekend family hikes, arrowhead hunting, skiing, fly fishing, and hunting. He spent summers in northern Idaho, western Montana, northern Arizona and New Mexico. His early career was spent in forest fire research and management, but shifted to management of alcohol use disorders. Throughout his life, Schaefer has championed many ideas emanating from his illustrious family heritage. He is currently the appointed Town Historian for Rotterdam, NY.

This program is free and open to the public. No registration required. Refreshments will be served.

Wiawaka Fundraiser Celebrates Retreat’s History Fashion show

marks 120th year of extraordinary women

Step back in time (in grand finery, of course) to celebrate Wiawaka Center for Women’s 120th year with the “History of Fashion Show”.

Re-enactors portraying Wiawaka founders Katrina Trask (1853-1922) and Mary Fuller (1862-1943) will welcome guests from 2 to 4 p.m. July 23 to celebrate the evolution of women’s fashions from the philanthropists’ era.

Spend the afternoon at the newly renovated Fort William Henry Carriage House, mingling with actresses portraying Trask, Fuller, iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986), intrepid journalist Nellie Bly (1864-1922), abolitionist Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), education activist Emma Willard (1787-1870) and several of their peers — all dressed in the fashion of their time.

“History of Fashion” is a collaboration of Wiawaka, Warren County Historical Society, The Chapman Museum and Fashion Follies. Victorian jewelry will be available for purchase, with 10 percent of proceeds benefiting Wiawaka. Tickets — which are $65 and include a luncheon of lite sandwiches, scones, sweets and iced tea, lemonade, and a special signature drink.

Tickets are available at wiawaka.org or by calling us at (518) 668-9690. You can also reach out to Executive Director, Doreen Kelly at [email protected] for more information.
