As the 2022-2023 academic year comes to a close, I would like to thank the many ARCS scholars, members, and supporters who have made our mission come alive this year. We are grateful for your commitment to scientific progress and innovation.

As my ARCS Presidency term also comes to a close, I am so proud of what we have accomplished together. Over the past year, we have surpassed our fundraising goals, addressed many of our strategic plan's key performance indicators, and strengthened our relationships with industry partners and members.

ARCS Seattle Chapter is now embarking on an important milestone: celebrating 45 years of igniting scientific innovation. What began with just two awards of $500 for scholars in 1978 has grown to 1,557 scholars and $23M in fellowships across 50 academic departments at the UW and WSU. We look forward to honoring this momentus year at the 45th Anniversary Luncheon on October 30th, and we hope you will mark this event on your calendars.

Celebrating 45 Years of

Igniting Scientific Innovation

To mark the beginning of ARCS Seattle Chapter's 45th Anniversary year, ARCS Members gathered at the home of Eve and Chap Alvord to celebrate and tip hats in honor of all they have accomplished since 1978. Thank you to Co-Chairs Sandy Carlson and Beth Toomey, and hosts Eve and Chap Alvord, for this beautiful event and the memories shared. WSU SPOTLIGHT

WSU's Breadlab

ARCS Seattle Chapter visited the Skagit Valley this March, to tour a place where science meets hunger, in search of the perfect loaf of wheat bread. WSU's Breadlab quite literally brought whole wheat and sustainable wheat production to our table, courtesy of Dr. Stephen Jones and ARCS Alumni Merri Metcalfe (pictured, photo cred: Alice Gautsch Foreman). Merri's research focuses on the accessibility, quality, and affordability of grain-based products from Western Washington, and breeding for increased fiber content in wheat, along with the subsequent health and cropping/food system benefits.

In developing agronomically sensible and economically viable grain crops, WSU's Breadlab creates diverse and decentralized food systems, engaging a global community of people in a conversation about what they eat and how it’s produced. UW SPOTLIGHT

Medical Science Training Program

M.S.T.P

ARCS Foundation Seattle Chapter is proud to support the University of Washington's Medical Science Training Program (M.S.T.P), which is the fourth-oldest NIH-supported MD-PhD program in the country, now entering its 53^rd year. The program has produced just under 300 graduates, including over 50 UW and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center faculty.

"ARCS support of our program has made a profound, enduring impact on our ability to recruit the most highly talented MD-PhD students from around the country, and to empower them with the community and financial support necessary to assure their success and sustain their commitment to the advancement of science."
