President's Statement
Dear MWC Members:

The 2019-20 ARCS year is off to an inspiring start as we hosted the Scholar Awards Reception on October 23rd at the beautiful National Academy of Sciences (NAS) building. We were honored to have strong attendance by our corporate, foundation, and member donors, as well as supportive friends and families of our scholars. We were treated to an entertaining and informative keynote address by Dr. Steven Monfort , the John and Adrienne Mars Director of the Smithsonian National Zoo, as well as a warm welcome address by Dr. C. D. Mote , President Emeritus of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). We are grateful to Dr. Mote for facilitating our long relationship with the NAS, and look forward to continuing collaboration as we welcome the incoming NAE President, Dr. John Anderson and his wife Pat, both long-time supporters of ARCS.

Every year, the SAR is a highlight for our chapter as it is an occasion to celebrate scholarship, innovation, and research, and to celebrate our commitment to advancing STEM education and research. We were particularly happy to offer, for the first time, a scholar pre-reception sponsored by  Georgetown University . It was gratifying to see our scholars taking full advantage of the networking opportunity.

In September, we enjoyed a delightful evening, connecting with fellow MWC members at our Fall Membership meeting. Thank you to Alice Laning and Karen Finkbiner for their work organizing the event and seeing to every detail. The highlight of the dinner was presenting Jane Riddle as the 2019-20 MWC ARCS light . Jane was recognized for her unparalleled dedication to our chapter and leadership as the current endowment treasurer and past president.

Growth and retention of our membership continues to be a focus this year and we are thrilled to have recently approved three new members to our Chapter. At an upcoming event, please be sure to welcome Angela Olsen, Amanda Ulmer, and Bonnie Hayter to the MWC . Speaking of upcoming events, be sure to keep an eye out for the monthly ARCS Coffee houses . These informal and fun gatherings, conceived by Co-VPs of membership Susan Trice and Michelle Bailey , are a terrific way to both introduce new potential members to ARCS and connect with each other.

We look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming Holiday Party . It is sure to be a “roaring” good time as Marie Carr, Mary Jo Ruane, and the holiday party committee have been hard at work planning a festive occasion sure to be one for the history books!

As always, please do not hesitate to call/write if you have questions or suggestions. We encourage you to engage with the committees in which you’ve shown interest and know that your thoughts and ideas are always welcome.

We are so grateful to have a generous donor offer a matching gift challenge of $15,000 to help reach our Chapter endowment goal of $1,000,000!

Once matched, this means a total of $30,000 raised will help us get that much closer to being able to fund endowment scholars into perpetuity. Please consider making your contribution to the endowment fund by 12/31/19!
