Dear MWC Members:
I hope all are enjoying a wonderful summer ....whether you are spending time outdoors in the garden, at the beach with the family, or inside with air conditioning and a good book -- it's a great time of the year.
As I reflect on the end of the 2017-18 year, I am filled with pride and gratitude! Spring accomplishments included:
- attending our 5 University Partner campuses and hearing about the impressive work being done by the 17 graduate and 3 undergraduate scholars;
- Hosting a very successful National ARCS All Member Conference (AMC);
- Enjoying the Spring Member Meeting at River Bend Country Club, with thanks to Jane Riddle for hosting;
- Scholar fund donations exceeded 2017-18 levels; supporting more scholars;
- Fund-A-Scholar donations will support 13 Graduate Scholars and 7 Undergraduate Scholars;
- Earnings from the Endowment Fund ($884K) will support 1 Endowment Scholar.
I have met many of you, our members, this year and thank you for your commitment to the ARCS MWC. I look forward to meeting even more of you and working together in the upcoming year.

Patty

Message from National President
& MWC Member Andi Purple
|
|
We are more than halfway through our 50th year as a Chapter. I am very proud of the accomplishments of my home Chapter and want to again thank you all for helping make the All Member Conference held in April a huge success. Portland, Oregon will be the site for the next AMC to be held in the Fall of 2019.
Our challenges for ARCS as an organization continue to be increasing our membership, making an impact on our scholars, and sustaining financial security. Communications between the Chapter Presidents and Committee Chairs are a great way to share success stories and ideas. The website, national newsletter, and periodic webinars are other ways to learn how other chapters are meeting these challenges. I encourage Metro Washington members to volunteer to serve on a National Committee to learn more about the national operations.

Update on MWC Endowment Fund
Jane Riddle, MWC Endowment Treasurer
|
|
The ARCS/MWC Endowment Fund is very fortunate to have had a long standing relationship with the Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL). ORNL leadership has been part of the Endowment Scholar selection committee and has hosted endowment scholar visits to the lab for many years. This past May, ORNL hosted MWC Endowment Scholars Jennifer Hays (UVA), and Zachary Eldredge (UMD). MWC Scholars Evan Gardner (GU), Mason Molesky (GWU), and Macauley Breault (JHU) were also able to attend. It was a fantastic opportunity for the scholars to learn about the technical issues the lab is working on as well as the various post-doc opportunities available at ORNL. Highlights of our visit to the lab included tours of the High Performance Computing Facility, Center for Nanophase Materials Science and the most impressive Spallation Neutron Source. The scholars and I had a wonderful day and are so thankful to the hospitality extended to us by our wonderful host Dr. Ben Thomas. We look forward to growing our partnership with ORNL and our next scholar visit to their facility.
Our Endowment Fund continues to do well and we will be evaluating our income this fall to see if we can fund a 2019-20 scholar. If you would like to contribute to our Endowment fund or have questions, please feel free to contact me any time. We can accept securities and, of course, cash. Every contribution gets us closer to the $1 Million mark! Many thanks for all the support we have received to date! Send donations (checks should be made out to ARCS/MWC) to:

The scores are in for this year’s Marathon Bridge and Karen Magley is busily trying to set up next year’s teams. This past year there were 9 teams, but we’d love to have several more for 2018 - 19, so that we get to play with an even larger number of people. For those of you who aren’t familiar with how Marathon Bridge works, each player has one partner for the year and each team plays 6 other teams, on a date of their own choosing, sometime between September and early June. Please note, that both members of the team do not need to be members of ARCS. In fact, this is a nice way to introduce a friend to ARCS or to get her to participate, even if she doesn’t have the time to be a full-time member of ARCS. The bridge play is strictly social, although ARCS makes a little money from it and we do keep track of the scores. The winners list is different from year to year & there are no prizes for them, just “bragging” rights (just kidding). This past year’s winners were:
First Place: Sally Burns & Darlene Lebedev – 19420 points
Second Place: Holly Coyne & Marilynn Sweetser – 19270 points
Third Place: Karen Magley & Marie Petersen – 18290 points
Fourth Place: Betty Polutchko & Toni Schierling – 16730 points
Fifth Place: Terry Holmes, & Marie Carr, Betsy Cooke & Joanne Harman – 16210 points (a real team effort!)
The cost to play for the year is $75 for ARCS members and $100 for non-members. Any one who would like to play this coming year is asked to contact Karen Magley
([email protected])
or 703-728-3321) for a registration form and more information. Forms and checks need to be sent to Karen as soon as possible.
