Hello Administrators,
It’s been a very busy year for all of us at ARI. In 2022, we awarded more than $450,000 in grants to fund innovative research that holds realistic promise for postively impacting the lives of autistic people. To learn more about the work we did in 2022, see our accomplishments for 2022 and a current list of ARI-funded research projects.
Connecting investigators, professionals, parents, and those on the spectrum worldwide is essential for effective advocacy. Whatever 2023 brings, you can count on us to continue to focus on education while supporting research on genetics, neurology, co-occurring medical conditions, nutrition, sensory processing, severe and challenging behaviors, and adult and senior issues.

The latest series provides expert insight into co-occurring conditions and autism. Topics include challenges faced by those aging with autism, gastrointestinal issues, and barriers to individualized medical care that autistic people encounter.

Daniel Torisky 1932-2022: Champion of the Autistic Population | Daniel Torisky was a parent of a child with special needs and an advocate who lobbied tirelessly to improve the lives of those with autism and their families. Daniel was perhaps best known for his role among the founders of the Autism Society of America in the mid-1960s and its Pittsburgh chapter, and for playing a pivotal role in shaping state legislation and expanding services for the autistic population. He will be missed. | | |

Arnold D. Vetstein 1926-2022: Co-Founder of the League School of Greater Boston | Arnold and Leona Vetstein met with Bernie Rimland in the early 1960s because they would not accept the prevailing theory at that time that autism was caused by "refrigerator" mothers. Bernie's support and encouragement led Leona and Arnold to found the League School, which continues to this day, supporting many families with children on the autism spectrum. | |

From ARRI: COVID-19 epidemic’s effects on infant development studied | | |
|
A new meta-analysis indicates that infants born or raised during the COVID-19 pandemic do not exhibit impaired neurodevelopment overall. However, the study suggests that infants who experienced their first year of life during the pandemic have an elevated risk of communication impairment, regardless of gestational exposure to SARS-CoV-2. | | |
From ARRI: Study offers clues about eye contact avoidance in ASD | | |

Adults with autism exhibit less activity in a specific
brain region during eye contact than neurotypical adults do, according to a new study. Researchers used a noninvasive neuroimaging method to analyze the brain activity of pairs of adults, each including one participant with ASD and one neurotypical participant, during brief social interactions involving eye contact.
