Latest iPad App Enhancements

Welcome back to Jump Seat. The business aviation community is quite literally composed of people “on the go” and having all of the information necessary to complete the task at hand is a necessity for the entire operation. As such, iPad applications are a preferred method for many. Release 6.2.10 of the ARINCDirect iPad application brings the functionality more in line with what is available via the desktop browser – keeping more of what you need at your fingertips.

Enhanced Turbulence and Icing Data

The Flight Hazard data will now be available in 1-hour timestamps (upgraded from 3-hour timestamps) for both Global and North American domains. In addition to hourly forecast data, operators will receive fresh weather data every 6 hours (compared to existing 12-hour updates), allowing for greater forecast confidence due to accelerated model updates. Perhaps the most noteworthy Flight Hazard weather enhancement is seen in the higher data resolution. The global data resolution will be increased from 55km to 27km for all three Flight Hazard models (EDR Turbulence, Icing, and Thunderstorms). Higher weather data resolution allows for greater insight and precision of flight hazard potential, improving overall flight operations for pilots.

Refactored Layers Menu

By refactoring the menu for layers within the Map tool, we are able to group layers into logical categories, making them easier to find and utilize. Additionally, the added ability to use a slider on applicable layers is an enhancement that enriches the enhanced turbulence and icing data. Finally, this refactoring creates the groundwork necessary to add new layers with less effort. Case in point: keep reading to learn more about new layers that are part of this release.

New Permit Requirements Layers

To mirror what is available via the desktop browser, we’ve added a new layer on the Map tool within the iPad app that is dedicated to portraying when permits are necessary – whether overflight, at the destination, or at your tech stop. This provides users with more situational awareness and the ability to make educated decisions about flight plan routing and airport choices.

New Communications Layers

Another new layer available with the Map tool provides a visual glance of various flight deck and cabin connectivity services provided by ARINCDirect. The Communications layers allow users to overlay coverage maps for Inmarsat, ViaSat, FANS CPDLC and ADS-C, and ATN. In turn, flight planners can determine whether the selected route maintains coverage or needs to be tweaked slightly to ensure that there are no gaps in connectivity.
