New iPad Feature - Ownship Position via Onboard Router

Welcome back to Jump Seat. Today we're excited to announce the most recent enhancement to our beloved ARINCDirect iPad application. We’re introducing support for the Satcom Direct Router (SDR). This is an often-requested feature.

Our latest App Store release, version 7.1, offers ARINCDirect customers with an SDR onboard to receive position data directly from the SDR into the iPad app. You no longer need to carry an external GPS device into the cockpit - the SDR will take its place. In partnership with Satcom Direct, you can now access this capability on many business and general aviation aircraft equipped with SDRs.

When you connect your device’s WiFi to your SDR, the configuration will be updated automatically as the position data source for our app. This presents an "Own Ship" position throughout the flight and feeds position data into our Plotting Chart feature. This helps you with 5- or 10-minute checks and other functions that require accurate location. Further, if you tap on the aircraft icon on the map, we will show your Time & Distance to Destination along with Local ETA.

We have engineered the autoconfiguration to be very easy – just connect to the router, wait 30-60 seconds, and you’re up and running. On our router and firmware version, this has worked every time. Your situation may be different. If so, this document provides alternate ways to configure it.

The ARINCDirect iPad app was first launched in 2012 and is used by thousands of Business Aviation pilots every day. It provides pilots with essential tools that are used throughout flight for conducting efficient and safe operations.

We are hard at work creating an interface for flight planning directly in the iPad app! That will require an Internet connection, but our intent is that you’ll be able to create and file flight plans without ever leaving the app.
