Super Bowl LVII

Welcome back to Jump Seat. Super Bowl LVII takes place on Sunday, February 12 in Phoenix, Arizona. The FAA has posted air traffic procedures and guidance for the increased general aviation demand that is expected over a period between February 8 and February 13. Airports throughout the southwestern United States from Las Vegas to Phoenix to Los Angeles will see a significant spike in traffic leading up to the game and into the next day.

Reservations

If you plan to operate to any airports listed below, contact your FBO immediately to secure reservations for parking overnight or drop-and-go procedures.

  • Glendale Municipal Airport (GEU)
  • Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR)
  • Phoenix Deer Valley (DVT)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)
  • Scottsdale Airport (SDL)
  • Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA)
  • Chandler Municipal Airport (CHD)
  • Falcon Field Airport (FFZ)

Las Vegas Area

Please note, Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), North Las Vegas Airport (VGT) and Henderson Executive Airport (HND) will require PPR/FBO reservations for the Super Bowl as heavy volume is expected between the Las Vegas and the Phoenix area airports all weekend. Contact your FBO to secure a reservation.

Route Structure

The FAA will add required routes for IFR jets and turboprops into and out of PHX, DVT, GEU, GYR, SDL, CHD, FFZ and IWA on Friday, February 10 from 10 a.m. local time (10/1700 UTC) through Sunday, February 12 at 4:30 p.m. (12/2330 UTC). Departure routes for turbojet aircraft will be implemented and enforced on Sunday, February 12 at 5 p.m. (11/0000 UTC) through Monday, February 13 at 11 p.m. (14/0600 UTC). See the NBAA and FAA links below to view the required routes.

The ARINCDirect flight planning tools will reflect those particular routes via the autogenerated route option on the date and times they are required. They will not be labeled Super Bowl routes.

ATC Traffic Management Procedures

Expect ground stops and ground delay programs at any of the major and mid-major airports mentioned by the FAA NOTAM. Expected Departure Clearance Times, or EDCTs, miles-in-trail, and airborne holding are all possible traffic mitigation tools that could be used. We recommend that you plan your fuel accordingly.

Temporary Flight Restriction

A special event Temporary Flight Restriction, or TFR, will be NOTAM-published roughly a week before the Super Bowl. It is anticipated that the TFR will prohibit general aviation operations within a 10-mile radius of the stadium. This will last approximately two to three hours before kickoff through at least one hour after the game ends. There will likely be additional instructions for those operating 10-30 nautical miles outside of the restriction.
