Upcoming Advanced ICAO Filing Codes

Welcome back to Jump Seat. Today we’d like to focus on an approaching initiative related to advanced ICAO filing codes. While not mandatory yet, we’d like to make you aware of what is to come and how ARINCDirect will comply with this requirement. 

What’s Changing 

The FAA is planning on implementing several Required Navigation Performance -1 (RNP1) Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Arrivals (STARs). A change in equipment codes is necessary as the current set does not account for requirements such as Radius to Fix (RF) capability. However, before those changes are published the FAA still needs to finalize coordination with ICAO. 

The information provided to us indicates the codes are Performance Based Navigation (PBN) specific and only applied to the NAV/ field in Item 18 of the ICAO flight plan. Additionally, these new codes will have to align with existing codes in item 10a which covers equipment and capability. As an example of the upcoming changes, the FAA highlighted the STAYY4 SID from KSNA which will have RF capability as a requirement.

The FAA is looking at implementing the new equipment codes in November 2022; however, they noted that the new codes will be accepted if flight planning providers, such as ARINCDirect, implement them earlier.
