ARISE DETROIT! SPOTLIGHT: DETROIT BLIGHTBUSTERS

JOHN GEORGE,  EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

MISSION

Our goal is stabilize, revitalize and rebuild Detroit .  We also want to create homeowners and business opportunities.

HOW IT IS COPING WITH THE HEALTH CRISIS AND CONTINUING TO SERVE
.
We are working with Meijer and State Rep. Karen Whitsett, distributing food, face mask, gloves, sanitizers, refrigerators and toasters to help the community cope with the health crisis. We are power washing street and alleys, bleaching and soaping down neighborhoods. We are prepping grounds in Detroit Farm City, our urban garden. We are communicating through Facebook, Zoom to stay in touch with our network of supporters and volunteers. We are providing gloves and masks and doing social distancing with our volunteers.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE, BIGGEST SUCCESS
.
Our biggest challenge has been obtaining funding to continue our work because many funders are putting their money toward COVID-19 efforts.
The funding dynamic has changed. We are also challenged to get volunteers. Last year , we worked with 9,000 volunteers. This year, so far, we having only worked with about a hundred. Our biggest success has been getting supplies, food and materials thanks to Meijer and State Rep. Karen Whitsett.

ADVICE TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS

Don’t give up. We have been down and out before. Find something you can do in your community. Paint the garage of a senior or cut a senior grass. Spread the Detroit Love.
