A Word of Encouragement

"As He looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 'I tell you the truth,' he said, 'this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." Luke 21:1-4

Many parents today do not teach their children anything about generosity or giving. If I had to do it all over again, I would have taken a more proactive approach in teaching tithing to my children and finding ways to give to the poor. And traditionally many of us grew up where our parents may have had handed us a dollar to put into the offering plate, as opposed to training us to give from our own piggy bank. Many adults still don't really believe that all we have belongs to Him and we are simply managers of His provisions while we live this life.

The Widow's Mite story is one that can be told over and over and quickly to any age. Most of us if we were hungry would probably save some money for something to eat. But Jesus pointed her out because of her extraordinary generosity. Her two copper coins could have bought a loaf of bread; but instead, she gave it toward God's work. Remember, these were "all she had to live on." She even sacrificed life's bare necessities! Jesus doesn't tell us we have to do this--but his observation was based upon people who had more were putting in more but they weren't "putting in all they had to live on." That's true generosity--and faith. She knew God would provide some other way.
We give because we are thanking the Lord for all He has given, and we want to be faithful with what is His anyway. With joy, dedication and thankfulness we give because of this perspective.

The Scriptures tell us "God loves a cheerful giver." I always want to ask people if this means they should not give if they are not cheerful. People who have truly experienced the mighty, embracing, forgiving, empowering, and refreshing love of God can't help but give. If you want to find someone who really loves God and truly lives for God, look to how generous they are--even if they don't have much. The have found the riches which truly give peace and purpose. Have you?

In Romans 12:6-8 Paul lists a few other ways to give--prophesying, teaching, serving, teaching, encouraging, meeting needs in other ways, leadership, and mercy. So, yes, it isn't just about money. It's about our view of using all that God has given us for His glory.

What new ways can you give and sacrifice to the Lord?
