New Piece Commissioned for ARS
The names Daniel Hay and Chaz Warren may be familiar to those who use our online Music Libraries, as both are contributors. Daniel is a composer, including Blue Ridge Water Music, a Members’ Library Edition. Chaz is also a composer with works in the new music section of the ARS Libraries, and is a frequent performer of play-along tracks. They have been collaborating for a while, with Chaz recording much of Daniel’s music for his YouTube channel. Recently Chaz asked Daniel to create a piece as a gift to ARS. Daniel envisioned music that sounded like a single piece flowing through three choirs -- and his piece Agnus Dei, written for recorder orchestra, has achieved that.
The ARS is so grateful for this beautiful piece. Thank you, Chaz and Daniel!
Agnus Dei can be found in the online ARS Music Libraries, specifically the Recorder Orchestra Library. Listen to a sound sample here; members can download and listen to the piece here.
The ARS Music Libraries contain over 700 pieces, including many arrangements and compositions from contemporary musicians and composers. You can search the libraries for the types of music you want, as well as the number of parts you'd prefer for your consort. Peter Ballinger, music publisher, to receive ARS Presidential Special Honor Award
The ARS Board voted on the award at the Spring meeting in April. It will be presented to him at the Recorder Relay Concert on June 15 at the Berkeley Early Music Festival and Exhibition (BFX). Click here to learn more about Peter's accomplishments as he retired from music publishing last year.

At the same event, Hanneke van Proosdij will receive the ARS Distinguished Achievement Award. As an educator, performer, music director, and more, Hanneke has a long association with ARS and the recorder community at large.

Reminder: ARS Election Underway
The election period began on April 1, 2024 and the deadline is June 1, 2024 for members to cast their ballots. Members with an email address on file with us received an email on April 1 with a link to the election module on the ARS website. Those without an email address received a ballot in the mail. Members are able to click on the link, log in and use their provided unique link to proceed with voting. The Election module is also available on your member dashboard under "Engagement." If you have any trouble, please email the office for help.

In Case You Missed it: ARS Hires Geoffrey Burgess as New Managing Editor
He will replace longtime AR Editor Gail Nickless, who will be retiring after 30 years of service. Geoffrey is a recorder player who has written extensively about the late influential recorder maker Friedrich von Huene.

Awards Opportunity
Early Music America offers awards of up to $1,500 annually to support engagement projects for children and/or adults by organizations, ensembles, and individual artists. The awards are intended to promote awareness and appreciation of early music and historical performance with the goal of drawing new audiences and participants.
Application instructions, eligibility, and materials to be submitted can be found here.
Application Deadline: Monday, May 27 at 11:59pm PT. Recipients will be selected in June.

Barbary Coast Recorder Orchestra Performs "Facets" of Music
The Barbary Coast Recorder Orchestra (BCRO) presented a concert entitled "Facets" on Saturday, March 2, at First Church of Berkeley, CA. The annual free concert featured music ranging from Telemann to modern film scores to an ode to Los Angeles's diversity by Glen Shannon -- all showcasing the versatility of the recorder.

ARS Chapter Representative Roundtable to be Held in June
The Member Benefits Committee will hold the season's final Chapter Rep Round Table. The event can be found on the ARS homepage Events Calendar. It will be held June 1, 2024 from 2:00pm - 3:30pm Eastern time.

A Brief Reminder of ARS Scholarship & Grant Deadlines
Workshop Scholarships Any member who needs financial assistance to attend an in-person or online weekend or week-long workshop may apply for this scholarship. Deadline for week-long workshops: May 15
Weekend Workshop Scholarships Apply four weeks before funding is needed. Virtual events are also eligible for funding from Grants and Scholarships, as long as the amounts do not exceed stated limits.
Chapter and Recorder Orchestra Grants These grants are awarded to Chapters or Recorder Orchestras with 10 or more ARS members to supplement membership-enhancing programs. Deadline: May 15, with funds to be used after September 1
Educational Outreach Grants Meeting certain criteria, anyone teaching the recorder may apply for this grant. ARS membership is not required to apply. Application period: May 1-June 15, to be used after September 1
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grants Any chapter, recorder orchestra, or consort may apply. Partner Workshops and Businesses are also eligible. Apply anytime.
Traveling Teacher Program Recorder communities without a recorder teacher in their area may apply for a grant to cover a professional teacher's traveling costs. Deadline: May 15, to be used after September 1

Klezmer Fiddle Tunes Workshops

Different tunes will be played at each session.
We will read, play, and discuss various survival skills for these charming pieces. A treble clef version of the sheet music for the tunes being played will be displayed on the screen during the workshop.
There is limited enrollment, and pre-registration is required. The cost for each workshop is $10. The cost of each optional book is $15 (includes shipping if ordered with workshop registration).

North American Virtual Recorder Society presents their May Playing Meeting

When: Saturday, May 18, 2 - 3:30 PM, EDT
Cost: NAVRS Membership is $20 and each playing session is $15.
Membership is not required for your first meeting but there is a charge of $15.
Polyphonic liturgical and para-liturgical music had an extraordinary development in 17th century New Spain, where composers from Spain, Italy and Mexico, found a fertile ground to create. Hundreds of works were composed and imported for ecclesiastical services and festivities, as well as for the theatre and other secular institutions. We will learn about the main musical archives where thousands of works have been kept until today and we will play polyphonic music examples in 4 to 5 parts, including hymns with texts in original languages like Náhuatl, villancicos and chansonettas by Gaspar Fernández, Fray Jerónimo González, Juan García de Céspedes, Antonio de Salazar and Hernando Franco, that make extensive and fun use of syncopated rhythms and hemiolas.
