Learn about what the ARS Board has been up to as well as its future plans, and get a look at the financial picture. This is for members only, and your questions are welcome! It will be led by the ARS President, who will be elected by the Board in late September.

ARS Professional Development Grant Recipient Reports on Her Experience with the Sitka Residency
Alana Blackburn from New South Wales, Australia, was chosen as the Recorder Resident at the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology in Oregon. She was approved for an ARS Professional Development Grant to help with her expenses. She has given us her report, with photos showing the beauty of the area.

Listening to Early Music
Wondering how to find stream early music or find it on the radio? Here are some options compiled by Patty Johnson of the Sacramento Recorder Society:
• Sunday Baroque, which airs from 7am to 11am on 88.9 FM, KXPR.
• Harmonia provides podcasts at its website: indianapublicmedia.org/harmonia
• The Chicago Early Music website provides access to many early music resources. They are at: earlymusichicago.org
• Magnatune.com allows you to listen to music free and pay when you
choose to download, or you can subscribe for $15/month for unlimited
downloads
• Millennium of Music: "The sources and mainstreams of European music
from the thousand years before the birth of Bach." http://www.millenniumofmusic.com
• recorder-radio.com streams a variety of recorder music 24 hours a day
• Concertzender Oude Muziek (mostly early music, with a Dutch announcer.)
• The Boston classical station, WCRB, has an early music stream. Go to https://www.classicalwcrb.org/, click on the play button, and the early music stream is one of your choices. Click on it to listen.

ARS Member and Ohio Early Music Leader Passes Away
Friends and fellow musicians fondly remember Ron Cook, a force for early music in Ohio, who passed away August 15. Cook and his wife, Janice, founded The Early Interval in 1976 and a presenting organization, Early Music in Columbus, four years later. A long-time EMA board member, he won the Laurette Goldberg Award in 2016 for outstanding achievement in education or engagement. "He was a lightning rod," said Jim Bates, an Early Interval musician, in a Columbus Dispatch obituary. Cook "added the personal spark that would ignite something special… [Recorder players] in Columbus are fortunate that Ron loved early music."

Weekend Workshop Scholarships Apply six weeks before funding is needed. Virtual events are also eligible for funding, as long as the amounts do not exceed stated limits.

1) Bach on the Bass
September 30, October 7, 14, and 21: 10 - 11:15 AM, PT
Each session starts with a 15-minute warm-up to work on tone, fingers, and tongue. Then, each week we’ll work on the bass part (for our bass clef work) and the melody part or alto recorder part (for working on playing bass in treble clef) of arias from J. S. Bach cantatas. Pitch: a=440.
$100 for all four classes. Classes will be recorded and available to stream for one month.
2) An All-Zoom Practice Challenge: A Brief Survey of Repertoire for the Recorder Player, Part I
September 30, October 7, 14, and 21: 1:15 - 2:30 PM, PT
In this 4-session class we'll start each session on a technique warm-up, then each week we’ll work on sections of a new piece, making a brief survey of repertoire for the recorder player. We’ll focus on effective practice methods for all pieces. For intermediate and up alto and soprano (or tenor) recorder players. Pitch: a=440.
$100 for all four classes. Classes will be recorded and available to stream for one month.

Highland Park Recorder Society's Online Seminars
A Century of Symmetry and Song with Adam Gilbert
October 20th at 7:30 PM, ET
This class traces a tradition of composers crafting songs from symmetrical patterns, including numerical symmetries, melodic symmetries, and contrapuntal symmetries. These devices are hidden in lovely songs and compositions by 3 generations of composers from Gilles Binchois, Johannes Ockeghem, Josquin Deprez, and Antoine Brumel.
