ARS Beginners' Level Class for Alto Recorder

Ah, the sopranino! The much maligned smaller cousin of the soprano can be exquisitely beautiful, but it can also be screechy, unpleasant, and shrill. In this live, one-hour Zoom webinar, we’ll discuss key ways to help you develop the sweet, silvery sopranino sound we love! We’ll also talk about repertoire and ensemble considerations as you seek to further your skills.

2) New Short Course! Tunes Through Time: A Solis Ortus Cardine
Tuesdays: 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11 at 2:30 CT
"From the hinge of the sun’s rising/ To the uttermost bounds of the earth..."
So begins the evocative text of A solis ortus cardine, a poem written in the fifth century. The poem’s sweep is echoed by the distance it has traveled: For centuries, composers have placed its verses at the center of works both spare and elaborate. In this live, four-week Zoom course, we’ll explore diverse settings of A solis ortus cardine, beginning with plainchant melody, then following the tune as it travels through time and space. Get to know this exquisite hymn while tackling important questions of articulation, tempo, phrasing, breathing, and more.
Although all are welcome, this course is best suited to recorder players whose skills are at least intermediate.
The cost of the complete course is $98, which includes all four live sessions lasting approximately one hour each, plus playalong files.

North American Virtual Recorder Society presents their January Playing Meeting

**Starting in 2025, your first meeting is free and membership is not required to attend.
"The New-Yeeres Gift:” Ring in the new year (a few weeks late) with festive Holborne dances and other rousing and cheery pieces of the Renaissance and Baroque. In addition to Holborne’s “The New-Yeeres Gift”, we will experience some fireworks from Handel’s famous suite and play a setting of a popular Renaissance tune originally featured in a Medici wedding of 1589.

This class explores the rich textures and vibrant rhythms of Spanish Renaissance music, as it delves into Epiphany-themed works by three of Spain's most celebrated composers. Celebrate the journey of the Magi and the devotional depth with lively charm. Open to recorder players.
