Welcome to ARS NEWS, an e-newsletter for recorder players that has taken the place of our printed quarterly ARS Newsletter. In here, you will find all the same information featured in the old paper version, but with the addition of clickable links. This will allow you to learn more and also sign up for events that interest you. Please make sure to scroll to the bottom to see some upcoming events happening in the recorder world. ARS members won't want to miss the news about our ARS Annual Meeting on October 15. Enjoy!

The Fall issue of American Recorder Magazine is being mailed and is available online! Here are some of the highlights:
- ARS President David Podeschi shares his thoughts on his recorder journey in his last President's Message.
-
In a Technique Tip, recorder teacher Lobke Sprenkeling explains how to play air and finger vibrato (see her video here)
- Charles Nagel, proprietor of Cheap Trills Editions, has died. Read about his life and music in NEWS & NOTES.
-
In the ARS section of NEWS & NOTES, find the link to sign up to attend the ARS Annual Members' Meeting on Zoom on October 15.
- In the FEATURE department, you will find articles on early music improvisation by Tina Chancey; and another by Jennifer Carpenter describing our longtime love of La Folia. Both topics have play-along options, and Tina Chancey gives improvisation tips in LEARN.
- Hard to believe, but it's time to think ahead to seasonal music; read music reviews for the holidays in CRITIQUE.

The Members' Library Edition music accompanying this issue is a duet for altos called "Umulan o Umaraw (Rain or Shine)" and was composed by Jaymar Joshua Calayag, a composer based in the Philippines. The title “Umulan o Umaraw” is in the Tagalog language and translates as “Rain or Shine,” a local saying meaning that one experiences both pleasure and gloom in life. Two metrical divisions overlap in this gently undulating middle movement of a larger work. Separate parts as well as playalong recordings with one part missing are available for ARS members here. This piece was generously sponsored by John Nelson.

Checking in with Chapters, Consorts, and Recorder Orchestras | |
The "Summer in the Rockies" free playing sessions, hosted by the Denver Recorder Society on various Wednesdays and Sundays during the summer, had 39 participants! The range of music went from circus selections to folk (Stephen Foster, and from Finland, Sweden, Poland, Ukraine and the Celtic Nations). The goal was to keep playing during the period when many chapters take a break from regular meetings. Those 39 recorder players and any others interested will be invited to continue to tune in on Zoom for free "Newbies" gatherings that will be hosted 30 minutes before each Denver Recorder Society meeting (on third Sundays). Repertoire will be similar to what was played in the summer months. Contact the DRS vice-president Bill Urban, bill_denver@hotmail.com.

| |
ARS offers a webpage with all the chapters offering virtual meetings. There are several chapters with a worldwide membership, led by world-class music directors, thanks to the wonders of Zoom.
