American Recorder Magazine is Mailed and Online!

The Winter 2024 issue is all about transmitting the joy of recorder playing.

Offerings include:

  • The announcement of ARS Distinguished Achievement Award, which this year goes to recorder maker Patrick von Huene.
  • The Annual Fiscal Report for 2023-24.
  • Advice for those wondering what to do with Recorders Left Behind when loved ones pass away.
  • ON THE RECORD(ER) features two interviews: Nina Stern with news from New York to Nairobi (the cover story), and members of the Bassano Trio talk about their activities since the passing of Adriana Breukink.
  • Both FEATURES are about the transmission of familiar repertoire.
  • Renowned recorder researcher and editor David Lasocki looks back on 55 years of editing, and
  • John Turner recalls his involvement in the discovery of a favorite Handel Trio Sonata.
  • To complement Lucie McNeill’s report on the improbable success of The Atlantic Recorder Orchestra in LISTEN & LEARN, there is a generous helping of reviews of recent music written for recorder orchestras in MUSIC REVIEWS.
  • Other news includes details of the European Recorder Teachers’ Association Conference, and the London International Festival of Early Music.
  • In LEARN, Anne Timberlake suggests Four Recorder Resolutions for a Tuneful 2025.
  • Looking for stocking stuffers? Check out Tom Bickley’s recommendations for CDs: The Queen’s Masque from ensemble feuervogel; music heard in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on Seven Times Salt’s new CD, Easy As Lying; and Alkemie’s latest album, Love to my Liking.
  • Get Ready for Play the Recorder Day (March 15, 2025) with Harvey Stokes’ new composition Flight Games.

Play-the-Recorder Day 2025: Celebrate with Music in Person!

The 2025 Play-the-Recorder Day, to be celebrated on Saturday March 15, will feature “Flight Games” by Harvey Stokes. It’s a sprightly, playful composition that will offer fun as well as challenge to every level of player. The sheet music will be mailed alongside the Winter issue of American Recorder and is available online to members. Flight Games was composed to represent the activities of small birds as they move about communally in their varied aerial activities.

Today is Giving Tuesday: ARS Fall Appeal Underway

The biggest ARS fundraiser of the year is underway right now with a mailing to past donors and others. Donations make up a large segment of ARS income and are critical to offering ARS programs and resources. This year's letter focuses on two young players with dreams of pursuing a profession in the recorder world, and how ARS has helped. Watch your inbox every week in December for an email from the American Recorder Society with meaningful stories of recorder players helped by the ARS. And please, donate if you can -- it's tax-deductible.

Nearly Six Decades of ARS Newsletter Archives Now Online

ARS published a newsletter prior to launching American Recorder magazine in 1960, and later began using newsletters for more local and date-sensitive news. You can learn some fascinating ARS history by checking out our trove of newsletters from 1950-59, and then 1980-2024. If you have any paper ARS Newsletters that are not in our digital archive, we would love to add them. Email Susan Burns in the ARS office.
