AR Magazine is Available Online and Landing in Mailboxes!

Some highlights for this issue are:

  • In FEATURES, former Board member Richard Carbone discovered that "The Man I Love" by Ira and George Gershwin, is no longer in copyright. In this AR, he shares a two-page version arranged for SATB recorders by late recorder player/composer David Goldstein. That two-pager, plus the pdf of the original one-page arrangement in Goldstein’s hand, c.1980s, are both in AR Extras.
  • Also in FEATURES, it's a double anniversary year for recorder luminary Frans Brüggen (1934-2014). Recorder professional/educator Cléa Galhano collected and introduced memories from musicians all over the world whose lives and music were profoundly influenced by the "Recorder Player of the [20th] Century."
  • In LEARN, recorder professional/educator Michael Lynn shares music by Marin Marais, originally for flutes but adapted by Lynn using typical 18th-century practices. His article explains how to play this music, as does his informational video on YouTube about this previously unknown set of works--and he plays the two duets with recorder player David Dyer. This issue's cover is Lynn's photo of the manuscript.
  • Have you been listening to the sound clips on the ARS YouTube channel of music reviewed by Victor Eijkhout in recent CRITIQUE magazine departments? Some of Eijkhout's reviews have accompanying sound files, with the music scrolling behind the sound, so you can hear it on YouTube before purchasing. This issue's reviews by Victor are mostly of music "for the birds."

The Members' Library Edition for this issue is called Two Tenors Talk, a very approachable duet sponsored and commissioned by ARS member Catherine Roha. Music Editor Glen Shannon describes it this way: "A pair of equal recorders have an easy but meaningful chat in this clever duo for players of all skill levels, written especially for the ARS."

ARS Hires New Managing Editor

The ARS hiring committee interviewed many excellent candidates, and chose someone with highly relevant experience as well as excellent recorder bona fides. The new hire will replace longtime AR Editor Gail Nickless, who will be much missed for her encyclopedic knowledge of all things ARS. Read all about it in your copy of AR Magazine or online in the AR archive (requires login). A news item will appear on the ARS homepage after members have had the chance to see the magazine article.
