The American Recorder Society (ARS) and the North American Virtual Recorder Society (NAVRS) have invited interested students to join Dr. Harvey Stokes for a series of virtual masterclasses on composing and arranging for recorders. Harvey Stokes, composer of The 2025 Play-the-Recorder Day piece, will lead the program. Classes are to be held on January 30 and April 10. Anyone wishing to audit the class is welcome to join.

The Early Music Foundation is hosting an Online Musical Instrument Auction
EMF is holding an online auction of musical instruments - 62 lots including recorders (and other winds), strings, percussion, and keyboards. Proceeds go toward funding the programs and supporting the mission of the Early Music Foundation in New York City.

ARS Chapter Representative Roundtable Dates for first half of 2025
The ARS Chapter Roundtable is back for 2025! Gather on Zoom with Phil Hollar and have a chat with your fellow leaders about what's happening in your chapter.
This year we are alternating the quarterly meetings between Saturdays and Sundays so that every rep has the opportunity to attend at least once or twice. The dates are on the ARS homepage Events Calendar. All times are 2:00pm - 3:30pm Eastern time.

A Brief Reminder of ARS Scholarship & Grant Deadlines
Weekend Workshop Scholarships Apply four weeks before funding is needed. Virtual events are also eligible for funding from Grants and Scholarships, as long as the amounts do not exceed stated limits.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grants Any chapter, recorder orchestra, or consort may apply. Partner Workshops and Businesses are also eligible. Apply anytime.

ARS 2nd-Level Class for Alto Recorder
with Anne Timberlake
Only a few spots left! Continue your alto recorder studies with Anne Timberlake. This course is a straight continuation of the four-week beginners' course offered in January, but that course is not a pre-requisite for taking this course. Review and expand upon foundational concepts of recorder technique and further develop technical skills.

Multiple Class Offerings

1) Next Level Bass: Solos and Duos
Feb 11, 18, Mar 4, 11 at 1 PM, ET
Each session starts with a short warm up and then progresses to Renaissance duos from Haas's Duos for Basses, Vol 1; and solos from Baroque repertoire. For players who read bass clef fluently and can play a 2-octave chromatic scale.
$100 for all 4 classes.
2) All-Zoom Practice Challenge
Feb 11, 18, Mar 4, 11 at
4:30 PM, ET
You'll practice technique exercises for 30 minutes with me, then 2- minutes on a Renaissance duo and 20 minutes on a Handel sonata, focusing on effective practice methods for both pieces.
$100 for all 4 classes.

Diminution is an age-old practice that lets us take simple melodies and elaborate upon them. This live, 1-hour Zoom webinar will introduce the 5 key building blocks of diminution and discuss how to combine them.

2) Four Weeks to a Better Tone
Tuesdays, Mar 18, 25, April 1 and 8 at 4:30 PM, ET
Tone is the heart and soul of the recorder, yet we seldom set aside time to focus on it. This short course will demystify the ingredients of good tone, addressing specific issues as they arise within the group.

North American Virtual Recorder Society presents their February Playing Meeting

Cost: NAVRS Membership is $20 and each playing session is $15.
Your first playing meeting is free and membership is not required.
Take me to the River: Rivers have shaped our history since the dawn of civilization, and that which shapes history likewise shapes art and culture. Whether as highways to be travelled, borders to be defended, or simply reminders of home, rivers have featured prominently in music throughout the ages. AEM Notation Classes
with Annette Bauer
1) 16th-Century Series: The Chansonnier of Zeghere van Male (1542)
Tuesdays, Feb 4, 11, 18, and 25 at 7 PM, ET
Open to all instrumentalists and singers. Class is specifically geared toward students who have completed the introductory notation class or have equivalent experience.
2) The Squarcialupi Codex
Wednesdays, Feb 5, 12, 19, and 26 at 5:30 PM, ET
The notation used in the Squarcialupi Codex is a hybrid form of French ars nova style and Italian trecento style. This class is geared toward more experience players of early notation.
