Play-the-Recorder Day 2023 is a Wrap! | |

On Saturday, March 18, ARS held a virtual event with Victor Eijkhout, composer of "Quo Vadis?", the 2023 Play-the-Recorder-Month piece. You will soon be able to watch the whole video on the ARS YouTube channel.
The popular annual event was hosted by ARS Board member Phil Hollar, with former Board president David Podeschi interviewing Victor, as well as current Board member Greta Haug-Hryciw leading a live member Q&A. The conversations were lively and engaging, and it all led up to playing music together.

All the attendees participated in playing the Play-the-Recorder Month piece along with recorder professional and teacher Emily O'Brien playing all the parts as well as conducting. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this a great success for the 3rd year in a row!
We still have a few days left of Play-the-Recorder Month, so we hope you will get your recorder out and play something joyful to commemorate it.

The Boston Early Music Festival (BEMF) is back, taking place from June 4-11, 2023. Recorder players and groups are invited to apply to play in the ARS Recorder Relay concert on June 9, 2022.

Message From the ARS Fundraising Commmittee
The ARS Spring Fund Appeal nearly is upon us, and the Fundraising Committee would like to remind members that they can double the value of their donation by asking their employer to provide a matching grant. This is a great way to support the valuable programs that ARS members have come to rely on, like free classes and our downloadable music for recorders, not to mention our scholarships & grants (see below for deadlines).

Moderators Needed!
As many of you know, ARS offers free beginner classes to all, as well as free second-level classes to members only. The classes are usually presented in four separate sessions over a couple of weeks, and are led by top-notch recorder teachers. One way to experience these from an insider's perspective is to moderate the classes so the teachers can focus on teaching. If you have Zoom experience and are interested in volunteering to moderate, we would love to hear from you! Contact the ARS office if you'd like to learn more.

A Brief Reminder of ARS Scholarship & Grant Deadlines
Weekend Workshops: Apply four weeks before funding is needed. Virtual events are also eligible for funding from Grants and Scholarships, as long as the amounts do not exceed stated limits.
Workshop Scholarships: Any member who needs financial assistance to attend an in-person or online weekend or week-long workshop may apply for this scholarship. Deadline for week-long workshops: May 15
Chapter and Recorder Orchestra Grants: These grants are awarded to Chapters or Recorder Orchestras with 10 or more ARS members to supplement membership-enhancing programs.
Deadline: May 15, to be used after September 1
Traveling Teacher Program: Recorder communities without a recorder teacher in their area may apply for a grant to cover a professional teacher's traveling costs. Deadline: May 1, to be used after September 1
Educational Outreach Grants: Meeting certain criteria, anyone teaching the recorder may apply for this grant. ARS membership is not required to apply. Application period: May 1-June 15, to be used after September 1
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grant: Any chapter, recorder orchestra, or consort may apply. Partner Workshops and Businesses are also eligible. Apply anytime.

ARS Free Beginners' Course for Soprano/Tenor

Build a solid foundation for learning recorder through this 4-part beginners’ course for soprano or tenor recorder. Professional recorder player and teacher Annette Bauer will lead you through this course, covering technical aspects of posture, breath, air flow, articulation, fingerings for C-instruments, and intonation, as well as presenting easily accessible repertoire.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music is offering online recorder classes for the Spring term beginning April 3rd, 2023.
Within the program is a technique class, including trills, and alternate fingerings, a bass recorder class, a piece study class (Telemann Fantasia 2), and a wind master class series for performers (and those who wish to audit).

Wedding Tunes for Two Workshops

Tuesday, April 11, 7 PM, CT,
Wednesday, April 12, 10 AM, CT Friday, April 14, 7 PM, CT
Different tunes will be played at each session.
During these workshops, we will play and discuss tunes from the “Wedding Fiddling Tunes for Two” series. We will read, play, and discuss various survival skills for these kinds of pieces. A treble clef version of the sheet music for the tunes being played will be displayed on the screen during the workshop.
There is limited enrollment, and pre-registration is required. The cost for each workshop is $10. The cost of each optional book is $15 (includes shipping if ordered with workshop registration).

Bartolomeo da Selma y Salaverde: a composer to discover

Tuesdays: 05/9, 05/16, 05/23, 05/30: 5pm- 6 PM, ET
Bartolomeo da Selma y Salaverde was a great composer from Spain, he was very influenced by all the Italian great masters in the early baroque period. He was a virtuoso dulcian player, but many of his music can be played in the recorder. I suggest to use sopranos and tenors for this workshop and let’s discover together some divisions, sonatas, and dances composed by this terrific composer.
Each individual class is $25 (I will need at least three students to start this class).

Weekly Monday and Thursday mornings: 9:30 - 10 AM, ET
Add structure to your life and practice routine! Each half-hour technique class will feature 15 minutes of breathing, tone, tonguing, or coordination warm ups for all levels; followed by 15 minutes of advanced technique taken from excerpts in baroque repertoire.
