The Summer Issue of American Recorder is Mailed and Available Online

Here are the highlights:

  • Cléa Galhano will receive the 2023 ARS Presidential Special Honor Award during the Boston Early Music Festival, following the ARS Recorder Relay, along with Nina Stern receiving the Distinguished Achievement Award.
  • American Recorder editor Gail Nickless has announced her plans to retire in 2024, and the ARS has launched a search for a new editor.
  • In FEATURES, David Lasocki examines the wealth of material that shows “churching the recorders” was common in Spain, Portugal, and their colonies in the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • Also in FEATURES, Emily O'Brien and Sam Gossner talk about their project, partially funded by the ARS, to create a virtual library of accurate recorder sounds for music-writing software.
  • In LEARN, Lobke Sprenkeling describes how you can use a metronome to improve your playing.
  • On our AR Extras webpage, read an interview of ARS Music Editor Glen Shannon conducted by the Recorder Magazine, as well as more info on using a metronome by Lobke Sprenkeling.

The Members' Library Edition music enclosed with the Summer issue is MLE number 78, St. Augustine Rag by William Ruthenberg, an ARS member who passed away earlier this year. (See his tribute article here.) This joyful ragtime piece personifies Bill's words: “What a fantastic life I have led, and how fortunate I have been.”

The piece was sponsored by The Hole in the Wall Gang, a “manically eclectic” (but mainly early music) group based in the Washington, DC, area.
