"Light & Shadow", a regional juried art show with works by thirty-six artists, will open at the Blanche Ames Gallery on Sunday, November 3, 2013.  Juror Margaret Dowell, MFA,PhD, selected art for this show from 142 artworks submitted. The selected include twenty-one artists from various towns in Frederick County, and fifteen artists from other states or counties.

"Soft Light" by Penny Hauffer

Art media include collage, painting (both oil and acrylic), drawings, photography, digital painting and mixed media.  The Juror and the Gallery invite visitors to explore the many ways that artists use lights and shadows to stimulate our awareness of the world.

Dr. Dowell, the show's sole juror, is an artist, educator and editor.  Her teaching career includes art instruction with Frederick County Public Schools and area colleges.  She held her first solo exhibit when she was 21, and since then has won numerous awards for painting and drawing.  In 1993, she was the first recipient of the prestigious Meredith Springer Award, given by the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center. She now lives and teaches in Southern Maryland.  Her current professional interest is using art as a resource for addressing the urgent public health issue of addictions.

The Blanche Ames Gallery is located in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, 4880 Elmer Derr Rd, Frederick. www.frderickuu.org/arts. Visiting hours and directions to the Gallery are available online at , or by phone 301-473-7680.

Light & Shadow, the Gallery's Third Biennial Show, will close on Sunday November 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. A People's Choice Award will be announced on the final day of the show.
