If you're new here, well howdy! Welcome to my weekly blog about Houston arts and culture, plus whatever else I wish to share from my brain. Scroll to the very bottom for more about it.

If you're a parent or caregiver, be sure to check my GISH PICKS page for my CAMP PICKS (holiday day camps) and EXPLORE PICKS (school year enrichment programs; my latest blog is here). I've also created weekly "Monday Night Live" videos at 9pm on my Facebook page about family fun through the end of summer; this week's video is here. Check 'em out, scream and shout!

As you read, please note that all the words in purple are linked to websites.

A man walks into a bar and orders two hurricanes and one corona. "That will be $20.20," replies the bartender. Hasn't 2020 just been nuts for us?! This is why, instead of my usual ARTS PICKS Spotlight this week, you've been gifted my silly photo and post about my hurricane preparedness kit. Some notables in my pile: a bottle of sparkling apple juice, chocolate syrup (pour it straight into a spoon for fun!), and my Tibetan singing bowl (great for meditating away any weather anxiety; see below for my meditation classes for kids!). If you're looking for a serious list, please click here. Take what you like and leave the rest -- just be sure you are prepared!

According to my favorite local "No Hype" weather guys, Space City Weather, Hurricane Laura is taking a turn towards our neighbors to the east. Of course, this is Texas: if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes! No matter the landfall location, please send thoughts and/or prayers out as it's expected that Laura will be big. Of course: because it's 2020.

And a funny not funny thing: the annual Houston Climate Week was postponed because -- you guessed it -- the weather.

Deep breathing and centering and self-awareness are very important right now (and always really...). I can help with current offerings are below. If you'd like to keep up with all my doings, please click here to get a sorta monthly newsletter from me full of info about my events and more, including my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. Be sure to follow my Facebook pages too -- Gish Picks Kids and Gish Picks Adults. I'm always throwing words and pictures around somewhere!
And now -- the two virtual events I am PICK-ing this week. Please note that even my VIRTUAL PICKS are always Houston-based because I am very committed to Houston arts & culture.

➡️ Virtual for ADULTS: Apollo Chamber Players is presenting an exciting new Virtual Festival 20x2020 that includes twenty video episodes featuring digital world premieres, new studio performances curated with behind-the-scenes composer and artist interviews, and creative new collaborations with Houston Ballet dancers (Apollo is known for their unique arts connections). Episode 1 debuts tomorrow night, Thursday, August 27, at 7pm with Grammy-winning composer Libby Larsen and Houston Chamber Choir tenor Wayne Ashley on Facebook and YouTube; the series continues every Thursday and Sunday through November 1. See a snapshot video about it with Artistic Director Matthew Detrick here.

➡️ Virtual for KIDS: The Houston Zoo offers super fun Facebook Live "Bringing the Zoo to You" adventures with their animals every Wednesday at 11am. Click on their Facebook page to tune in and click here to see past videos. The Zoo is now usually open 7 days a week -- but due to Hurricane Laura, they are closing today (Wednesday, August 26) and tomorrow (Thursday, August 27).

In non-pandemic times, and since I started publishing my blog in 2004, it has been a space to promote my curated list of unique live Houston area cultural events (PICKS) on the weekend for adults and kids. Because of COVID-19, those haven't happened since mid-March so I originally re-worked the format to focus on 5 Houston-based arts & culture organizations in my (Almost) Daily Dose of ARTS PICKS blog each of the NINE weeks of quarantine. You can see each edition - and read about 45 arts groups! - here.
And now I'm bringing you an ⭐️ARTS PICKS Spotlight⭐️ each week -- featuring an arts & culture space that is open -- and you'll get info about all of their activities and sometimes a video to bring them to life. Alongside that, I'll also be PICK-ing one local virtual event each for ADULTS and KIDS

I'll keep doing all of that until public events start happening again on a larger scale and I can start curating live event PICKS again.

In the meantime: please enjoy my weekly Spotlights and VIRTUAL PICKS, and please stay healthy!

P.S. If you want to IGNITE YOUR LIFE now or anytime, check out my list of "12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily" -- and watch the 12 videos I made about each Way here. I'm very proud of that list and my work and I hope it will help you live a fully creative life. Meditation, taking care of yourself, enjoying life, and laughing -- plus more! -- is what will get us through this global pandemic.
