If you're new here, well howdy! Welcome to my weekly blog about Houston arts and culture, plus whatever else I wish to share from my brain. Scroll to the very bottom for more about it.

I'm happy to let you know that I will now be doing "Wednesday Night Live" videos on my Facebook page each week at 9pm. Tune in for a short chat about arts and culture! The most recent video is here.

A special note if you're a parent or caregiver: I know ya'll are tired this week because school just started up. Hang in there! I'm cheering you on and am here to help. Be sure to follow my GISH PICKS page for not only KID PICKS but also my CAMP PICKS (holiday day camps) and EXPLORE PICKS (school year enrichment programs; my latest blog is here).

As you read, please note that all the words in purple are linked to websites.

WHAT'S ON MY MIND THIS WEEK? I'm ready to see movies on the big screen, ya'll! I don't know about you, but I'm a little tired of streaming flicks in my living room with my dogs. I'm ready to paaaarty in the aisles (COVID-safely, of course). And I've been dreaming of movie theatre popcorn and sodas and candy.

So you can imagine my joy in seeing that movie theatres are starting to open up in Houston. It's not for everyone, but if you are comfortable with that...they are ready for you! If you want a little preview of what to expect, this article really spells out the "new normal" of movie-going.

Read more about my favorite Houston movie theatre below (it just opened yesterday!). Other movie theatres that have opened in Houston are:

And, as I wrote last week, the National Association of Theatre Owners have created a CinemaSafe program to protect patrons against COVID. Not everyone wants to venture into a movie theatre just yet -- but we at least have that option now.
LET'S CONNECT! If you are wondering wassup with me this month, my current offerings are below. If you'd like to keep up with all my doings, please click here to get a sorta monthly newsletter from me full of info about my events and more, including my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project. Be sure to follow my Facebook pages too -- Gish Picks Kids and Gish Picks Adults. I'm always throwing words and pictures around somewhere!
My ⭐️ARTS PICKS Spotlight⭐️ this week is the Landmark River Oaks Theatre, which is now open DAILY (yippe yi yay!). I stopped in yesterday afternoon to see how the theatre was operating and can report that they are clean and following all CDC guidelines. I worked for Landmark Theatres in Houston from 1993-2000 so the River Oaks has a special place in my heart. I'm so happy that they can start doing what they love -- showing fine indie films -- and that they can open their doors and start making money again!

The two films they have onscreen are "All In: The Fight for Democracy," which is about voter suppression and "Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President," a documentary about how music has influenced the life of the world's most famous peanut farmer.

The upstairs bar and lobby of the theatre are closed, and the concession stand offers limited items. And they are cashless so bring your plastic. Enjoy your BIG SCREEN adventures!

And now -- the two virtual events I am PICK-ing this week. Please note that even my VIRTUAL PICKS are always Houston-based because I am very committed to Houston arts & culture.

➡️ Virtual for ADULTS: My focus this week is on movies so I want to let you know about the fantastic virtual film offerings at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, all of which you can see here. The September schedule is very robust and it's super easy to get tickets and start streaming anytime you wish!

➡️ Virtual for KIDS: the staff of the Children's Museum of Houston were CHAMPIONS for parents this summer -- flinging open their doors daily and providing live, in person, wackadoodle fun for families. And now, they are taking a break from all that and are temporarily closing the museum to launch their new virtual adventure platform, All-Time Access. It's a way to keep the museum in your back pocket whenever you need it! Carve out some time to peruse the menu -- it's amazing.

In non-pandemic times, and since I started publishing my blog in 2004, it has been a space to promote my curated list of unique live Houston area cultural events (PICKS) on the weekend for adults and kids. Because of COVID-19, those haven't happened since mid-March so I originally re-worked the format to focus on 5 Houston-based arts & culture organizations in my (Almost) Daily Dose of ARTS PICKS blog each of the NINE weeks of quarantine. You can see each edition - and read about 45 arts groups! - here.
And now I'm bringing you an ⭐️ARTS PICKS Spotlight⭐️ each week -- featuring an arts & culture space that is open -- and you'll get info about all of their activities and sometimes a video to bring them to life. Alongside that, I'll also be PICK-ing one local virtual event each for ADULTS and KIDS

I'll keep doing all of that until public events start happening again on a larger scale and I can start curating live event PICKS again.

In the meantime: please enjoy my weekly Spotlights and VIRTUAL PICKS, and please stay healthy!
