Executive Director's Report

Jennifer Swinney, ASA San Antonio

What an incredible month April turned out to be! We kicked things off with the BIGGEST Subfest BBQ Event in our chapter’s history — over 1,500 attendees joined us to celebrate our vibrant subcontractor community. The energy, connections, and support from our members were nothing short of inspiring.

But that wasn’t the only major milestone last month — we officially moved offices! After more than a decade in our previous location, we made the leap into a new space that reflects our growing membership and evolving goals. We are incredibly thankful for the small but mighty office that served us so well over the years. It was a space filled with great memories, hard work, and the building blocks of our chapter's success.

This move represents more than just a change in address. It’s a reflection of our chapter’s growth and the exciting direction we’re headed. Once we get settled and organized, we’re planning to host a big open house celebration, and we can’t wait to welcome you into our new home.

We truly believe this new space will open the door to even greater opportunities — allowing us to better serve our members, expand our offerings, and give back to the industry that supports us all.

As we head into the summer months, remember to stay hydrated, stay safe, and stay connected. We hope to see you at an upcoming event very soon!

APRIL RECAP

ASA Subfest Delivers a Day of Family Fun for Over 1,500 Attendees

April 12, 2025

The American Subcontractors Association (ASA) hosted its highly anticipated ASA Subfest, bringing together over 1,500 attendees for an unforgettable day of family-friendly fun, community spirit, and a whole lot of Texas BBQ!

Held under clear skies and high energy, the event featured an exciting lineup of activities for all ages — including live music, face painting, balloon twisters, caricature artists, cotton candy, ice cream, and even a petting zoo. A special appearance from the Easter Bunny delighted children and added a touch of seasonal magic to the festivities.

One of the main highlights of Subfest was the fiercely delicious BBQ competition, with 37 cook teams firing up their pits and serving mouth-watering creations. Congratulations to all the competition winners who brought the heat and took home top honors!

ASA extends its deepest appreciation to the incredible volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success, and to our generous sponsors for their invaluable support. Your commitment to the ASA community is what keeps events like Subfest thriving year after year.

ASA Celebrates a Successful Annual Fiesta Mixer with ABC & AGC

On April 23, ASA was proud to host the annual Fiesta Mixer alongside our esteemed partners, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and the Associated General Contractors (AGC). Held at Little Woodrow’s in Stone Oak, the event brought together professionals from across the construction industry to celebrate community, collaboration, and camaraderie.

The venue was packed as members from all three associations gathered to enjoy a lively evening of networking, cold drinks, delicious snacks, and an abundance of door prizes. The atmosphere was festive, underscoring the spirit of Fiesta and the strength of unity in our industry.

A highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the 2025 Fiesta medal — a stunning design featuring a radiant city skyline with each association’s logo proudly suspended below. It served not only as a keepsake but also as a symbol of our shared values and dedication to building a stronger construction community.

ASA, ABC, and AGC represent the best of the best in the industry. Events like these remind us of the importance of working together, supporting one another, and creating opportunities for meaningful connections. We are grateful for our continued partnership with these organizations and look forward to many more successful collaborations ahead.

Tech Meets Tradition: ASA April General Meeting Explores A.I. in Construction

On Tuesday, April 29, ASA San Antonio members gathered at the elegant Petroleum Club for an unforgettable evening of learning, laughter, and insight into the future of our industry. The occasion? Our April General Meeting, where members and guests came together to explore one of the most timely and transformational topics in business today: artificial intelligence.

The highlight of the evening was a dynamic presentation by Scott Hopkins of Broadway Bank, titled “Hard Hats & Smart Tech: How A.I. Builds a Better Tomorrow.” With humor, clarity, and a firm grasp on what matters to subcontractors, Scott engaged the crowd from the start—even those who walked in as A.I. skeptics.

Throughout the talk, attendees were introduced to practical ways A.I. can be leveraged to improve everyday business functions, increase operational efficiency, and stay competitive in an increasingly digital world. Scott's real-world examples and approachable style helped demystify A.I. and spark thoughtful conversation among attendees about how to apply these technologies within their own organizations.

This event would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to:

  • Broadway Bank
  • Everon
  • M&M Specialty Caulking
  • Tindall Building Systems

Their partnership and continued investment in our mission help make these events impactful and accessible for our membership.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to invite members to our next gathering on June 3rd for the Annual Association Celebration. This signature event marks the close of our fiscal year and is a chance to celebrate the accomplishments, camaraderie, and hard work of our incredible ASA community.

We hope to see you there—to toast the past year, honor our progress, and gear up for another strong chapter together.

Honoring the Fallen: ASA Attends Workers Memorial Day Ceremony at TEEX

On April 30, 2025, ASA San Antonio joined families, community members, and workplace safety leaders in solemn remembrance at the Workers Memorial Day ceremony hosted by TEEX in San Antonio. Held annually, this day is a powerful tribute to workers who lost their lives while simply doing their jobs.

This year’s event served as both a memorial and a call to action—a time to honor the memories of fallen workers while recommitting ourselves to creating safer job sites for all.

As part of the program, the name of each worker who passed away in the previous year was read aloud, and a bell was rung in their memory. It was a moment of deep reverence, reminding us all of the real lives behind the statistics.

Speakers included:

  • Jorge Pena, representing TEEX, who welcomed attendees and underscored the critical importance of safety education.
  • Alex Porter, OSHA Area Director, who reflected on the shared responsibility we all have to protect workers and ensure no one is left behind.
  • The wife of one of the fallen workers, who bravely shared the story of the last day she kissed her husband goodbye—a heart-wrenching reminder of the lasting impact workplace tragedies have on families and communities.

ASA is proud to stand in solidarity with those who continue to advocate for safer working environments across our industries. As subcontractors, business owners, and colleagues, we know that safety is not just policy—it’s personal.

Committee involvement is one of the BEST ways to market your company, as well as to get the most from your ASA membership. ASA members are always looking to do business together, and making yourself known to the membership is the best way to get the word out about what you do. Please see the list of committees who would love your ideas and input.
