New this year! CMS will conduct live member polls by text message. When the speaker opens a poll, the audience will be instructed to text "COMEDSOC" to 22333 to join. Questions will be displayed and audience answers will be shown live. No cell phone numbers will be collected and all answers will be anonymous.

The nomination period for the 2019 CMS all-member election will open Jan. 1, 2019. The Colorado Medical Society asks all members to consider nominating a colleague or self-nominating for one of the open leadership positions: President-elect (one position open), AMA Delegates (four positions open) and AMA Alternate Delegates (four positions open).

The election guide, available here, provides important information on the duties, eligibility, terms of office and honorarium for each open position, as well as candidate requirements, campaign guidelines, election process and more. Potential nominees can review the position descriptions and qualifications for office starting on page three of the election guide and the candidate requirements on page five of the election guide. Exploring Pain Management Strategies: A Patient and Provider Panel on Treating Pain With and Without Opioids - Oct. 10, 2018
A Medication Safety Learning and Action Network (LAN) Event coming up on Oct. 10 will feature a speaker panel of patients living with pain, a pain management specialist and a patient advocate who will explore different perspectives on pain management strategies. Topics will include approaches to non-opioid pain treatments, safe opioid use, and other strategies to promote best practices around safely and effectively managing pain. This event will address various approaches and resources available to physicians or your patients. Join in the conversation and invite your patients and their families for an informative session!

CBHC hosts annual meeting focused on opioid crisis and solutions
The Colorado Behavioral Healthcare Council (CBHC) invites all physicians to their Annual Behavioral Health Training Conference, themed "Connections Start Here." The event will be held Oct. 11-13, 2018, with pre-conferences on Oct. 10, at the Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center in Breckenridge.

Colorado Consortium Education Symposium: Best Practices for Pain Management and Addiction Treatment - Oct. 24

Join health care providers from across the state the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 24, for the 1st Annual Colorado Consortium Education Symposium: Best Practices for Pain Management and Addiction Treatment. Experts in preventing and treating opioid use disorders will be discussing the latest research and best practices you can incorporate into your practice. The symposium will be held at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.
The misuse and abuse of prescription opioids is a major public health crisis in Colorado, contributing to a dramatic rise in drug overdose deaths. According to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 1,012 people died of drug overdoses in 2017, with 373 people dying of overdoses related to prescription opioids.
The event will review non-opioid pain management and best practices around medication-assisted therapy (MAT) for opioid use disorders.
The Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention is organizing the event. MDs and DOs who attend are eligible for continuing medical education credit. All others will be given a certificate of completion to submit to their professional societies.
The symposium begins at 5 p.m. with a poster session, networking opportunities, and heavy hors d'oeuvres. The plenary session begins at 6 p.m. Guests are welcome to attend the Consortium's annual meeting the next day, Thursday, Oct. 25.
