President's Message
All ASCE members are required to comply with the Code of Ethics developed for our profession. The code
serves as a guide to the engineer's consideration for the public, clients, employers, and fellow professionals.
ASCE developed eight canons, or laws, for ethics with interpretations for its members to follow.
Full explanations of each canon are available on the ASCE website.
Engineers will require sound judgment to interpret how the code applies to specific circumstances, and t
here are consequences for those individuals who fail to obey the above statements. It is our solemn duty to understand and follow our ethical canons in order to uphold the prestige of our profession, support the law, and commit to the high standards of conduct.
In 2017 the Ohio legislature required professional engineers to attest that they have completed two hours of ethics or rules education every two years. In order to help our members fulfil this requirement, your ASCE Akron-Canton Section will sponsor one meeting a year on the topic of ethics. The subject of our upcoming April meeting will be ethics, so be sure to attend to obtain your certificate. I hope to see you there!

Exceptional March Meeting at Goodyear Hall!

Our March meeting was held at Goodyear Hall, across from the former headquarters, where we learned about the East End project, located on East Market Street, and its many challenges, including how the four East Market traffic lanes were turned into double calming lanes with bike paths, parallel parking, and prominent illuminated crosswalks. The theater and building were constructed in 1907 with many considerations not normally found in that day. Brent Redeker from IRG made a presentation on the history of the building, its former and future functions, and the challenges involved in gutting and repurposing the building into apartment flats, shops, and athletic facilities. Twenty attendees were treated to a grand tour of the Goodyear facilities, many of which had been only been seen by Goodyear employees. We visited the community rooms and the 1460-seat theater, beautifully restored to its former glory but updated with modern amenities. We also visited the roof where the original lighted Goodyear sign is awaiting funding for its restoration.

University of Akron Student Chapter News
Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders
On Saturday, January 26-27, two ASCE Student Chapter members traveled to Omaha, Nebraska for the opportunity to network with students from other university ASCE chapters. They also attended seminars to learn about membership recruitment, fundraising, outreach ideas, leadership skills, and how to increase involvement. Our University of Akron Student Chapter is dedicated to keeping their chapter strong!

Goodyear STEM High School Career Day
On February 17, The University of Akron ASCE Student Chapter was represented at the Goodyear STEM High School Career Day to encourage high school students who are interested in civil engineering to attend the University of Akron, to become ASCE members, and join either the Steel Bridge or Concrete Canoe design team.

on Waterways Renewed! begins
Construction Site Trolley Tours
The Akron Waterways Renewed! program is offering two-hour trolley tours of the completed and active sewer construction projects around the City of Akron in 2018. Attendees will learn about the ongoing Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel (OCIT) work by visiting a variety of basins and green infrastructure sites, as well as learn about the history of the canal.

ASCE Adjudicates at Western Reserve Science Day
On Saturday, March 17th, several hundred middle and high school students participated in the Western Reserve District 5 Science Day at the University of Akron. The students were exhibiting their science projects for judging at the regional level, with the winners going onto the state contest in Columbus. ASCE Akron Canton judged many projects that day and sponsored two $100 prizes for both a middle and high school winner.
The middle school winner was Elba Heddensheimer, a seventh grader at Incarnate Word Academy in Parma Heights. Her project demonstrated how combustible biogas can be generated from simple fermenting garbage. The high school winner was Jake Pentasuglio, a tenth grader at St. Vincent-St. Margh School in Akron. His project showed how different varieties of vegetation can absorb nitrogen from soil runoff, keeping less of it from getting into the lakes. Congratulations to both students!

Are you a Civil Engineer Interested in Becoming a Professional Surveyor?
The University of Akron College of Applied Science and Technology recently developed a Certificate of Surveying for Civil Engineers consisting of six web-based and online courses. This certificate is for those engineers with an EAC/ABET-accredited B.S.C.E. degree who wish to be eligible for eventual registration as a Professional Surveyor.
The six required courses that make up the certificate are design
ed to meet the academic content and minimum ORC requirements of 16 seme
ster hours in the required subject areas. The graduate would be responsible to also meet and document the experience requirement before qualifying fully for the PS exam in Ohio.
The University has an ambitious schedule of classes planned for the upcoming 8-week summer sessions. All six of the certificate classes are planned for summer offerings. Typically, the University also offers three classes in the fall and three in the spring semester as well. Enrollment officially begins in mid-March.
