President's Column
By Kenneth F. Kostura, P.E., M.ASCE

The Engineering profession celebrated Engineers Week this year, February 19 - 25. The Canton Joint Engineering Council did a great job again this year organizing the Canton Area E-Week banquet on February 22 at Skyland Pines. After a delicious meal and presentation of awards, the guest speaker, Mr. Joseph Connolly, an aerospace engineer with the NASA Glenn Research Center, made a very interesting presentation on the "Engineering Challenges of Sending Humans to Mars". The challenges include the long-term effects of low gravity on humans, communication with Earth (it takes 20 minutes to send a message), and many others. Engineers of all disciplines will be engaged to solve these problems.

The Akron area E-Week Committee put on the 2017 E-week banquet on February 23 at Emidio and Sons Banquet Center. The host society was ADSPE. The event was very well attended. The program featured the student design team competitions from the University of Akron. Students made presentations on the various competitions including ASCE Student Chapter President Emily Green on the Concrete Canoe competition and Vice President Nate Otermat on the Steel Bridge competition.

ASCE award winners were recognized at both banquets. Monica Moody is the recipient of the 2016 Memorial Scholarship. Monica is a junior studying Civil Engineering at the University of Akron. She is a past president of the ASCE Student Chapter and is pursuing a career in environmental engineering. Chuck Vickers was selected by the University of Akron Civil Engineering faculty as the Outstanding Civil Engineering Senior. Chuck has served two terms as vice president of the Student Chapter and plans to pursue a career in bridge design and structural engineering.

Our March Section meeting will be held at Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn on March 16. Our guest speaker will be Jack Noble, ODOT District 4 Bridge Engineer who will be discussing the planning and design of the replacement Route 8 Bridge over the Little Cuyahoga Valley. We will also be recognizing the Akron-Canton Section's 2017 Life Members at this meeting. Please plan to attend. Meeting details are shown below.
There is still time to become a sponsor of our Section for the 2017 calendar year. We are offering newsletter and meeting sponsorships. Both types support our scholarship fund. The meeting sponsorships also help to reduce the cost of meetings for our members and provide additional advertising opportunities. See the newsletter below for details.
Please watch your email for news and updates from your Akron-Canton Section. If you have an interest in getting involved on one of our committees, please contact any of our Board Members. We welcome your participation.

Regards,

Kenneth F. Kostura
