President's Column
By Kenneth F. Kostura, P.E., M.ASCE

This is the last newsletter of the program year.  The next one will come in October.  In the meantime, watch for your email for periodic announcements of ASCE activities.  With warm weather now upon us, we can take advantage and spend more time outside and less time at our desks.

Our April Section meeting was our annual joint meeting with the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) at the Galaxy Restaurant in Wadsworth. ASHE hosted the meeting this year.  Our speakers were Jim Demboski of Environmental Design Group, and Darren Rozenek of the City of Akron.  Their presentation described the implementation of asset management software by the City of Akron's water utility to guide the repair and replacement of water mains and other assets.  It was easy to see how this software could be applied to all kinds of infrastructure.  Our speakers did a great job of making the topic understandable and relevant.

At the April meeting, we elected Timothy Gilbert, P.E, to be our Treasurer, starting in October.  Tim works at Timken Steel in Canton and has been actively participating on the Workshop Committee, helping to prepare and run the workshops.  We thank Tim and congratulate him for agreeing to join our Board of Directors.

We did something new this year to recognize graduating seniors who have been active in the University of Akron ASCE Student Chapter. At the April meeting, Emily Green, Student Chapter President, and I presented graduation stoles to three Student Chapter members who met certain criteria for active participation in ASCE.  The students are Jessica Givens, Brad Harvey and Charles Pigozzi.  The stoles are white satin, embroidered with a blue ASCE logo, and will be very handsome with their cap and gown.   Congratulations!

Our next meeting will be the annual Spouses and Friends social meeting.  We have made arrangements to do the brunch train ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Line on Saturday, May 20.  See the flyer below for details.  And watch your email for announcement of the Rubber Ducks annual summer baseball outing on Friday, July 21.  This is a fireworks night and we will be having a pre-game tailgate.  We look forward to seeing you there.  And have a great summer.

Regards,

Kenneth F. Kostura
