As September of 2021 approached, I realized that my time as the ASCE AZ Section President was coming to an end. Starting in October I will officially pass on my duties and responsibilities to the new incoming President Jose Aguilar who I am confident will do just as good a job, and likely better than I was able to do. In addition, I reflected on some the events of the past year.
One of the most memorable moments of the last year was the work the AZ Section put into opposing Senate Bill 1062. As part of this Jose and I both had the opportunity to speak in front of the House Commerce Committee on behalf of the Section. I mention this because I could not have done this without the support of the rest of the Section board, and especially our Legislative and Public Affairs committee chairs Allison Sadow and Caitlyn Hall.
One of the more obvious events of the last year has been the changes we have all seen as a result of the pandemic. These changes prevented us from meeting in person and benefiting from the same type of networking that we are accustomed to through ASCE. In addition to this I looked back at the first monthly article I wrote in November where I shared my appreciation for the incoming officers taking on leadership roles within ASCE. After the last year my admiration and appreciation for these leaders has grown tremendously. This team of people worked tirelessly to serve its members in the best way they could by being creative, sharing resources and never giving up. If you talk to or see any section or branch officers, I hope you join me in expressing your appreciation for their work this last year, it was not an easy task.
Finally, I want to thank everyone for your trust and support as I served in this role for the past year. While a part of me welcomes the opportunity to pass this on, I certainly will miss the involvement.
Thank you,
Gary Miller
