Hello ASCE Arizona Section Members,
I want to start off the ASCE “new year” by saying that I am extremely excited to serve YOU as President of the ASCE Arizona Section! And yes, I mean YOU who is reading this. ASCE would not exist without its members and leaders. Speaking of leaders, I would like to congratulate all those who have stepped into a new leadership role of ASCE. You may have been dragged into that role and have no idea what you got yourself into but trust me when I say this, “you will not regret it and it will all be worth it!” I also want to say thank you to Gary Miller (our now past-president), along with all the previous ASCE leaders, for your service and for getting us to where we are today. The last 2 years have been some of the hardest years we have ever seen at many levels, and you all got us through it by being flexible, adaptable and creative in ways to keep our members engaged.
I will try to keep these short because who wants to read a full editorial paper? I also have to do 10 more of these so I don’t want to run out of material! I will end with this: As I take a step back and think about why I continue to be involved with ASCE it is quite simple: I have made long lasting friendships ASCE and I am given the opportunity to follow some of my passions. In my case those passions include K-12 outreach which I believe is so important to inspire the next generation of civil engineers, and legislative affairs to be the experts that influence policies that help protect the health and welfare of the public. Which by the way, the application to attend the ASCE Legislative Fly-In (March 2-4, 2022) in Washington DC and virtual is December 1, 2021! Those are only 2 of the many aspects that ASCE focuses on, so there is something for everyone. I will talk more about my passions in future newsletters, but I just want to encourage YOU to be engaged in ASCE in a way YOU find interesting and exciting.

Long-awaited Infrastructure Bill is Now Law |
|
|
President Joe Biden has signed the highly anticipated Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law, providing $550 billion in new spending and a five-year, $305 billion reauthorization of federal highway and transit programs. House Democrats passed the bill with the help of 13 Republicans, four of whom represent parts of New York. Recap of October 13 Virtual Phoenix Branch Lunch Meeting
On October 13, the Phoenix Branch held a virtual Lunch meeting discussing the I-10 Broadway Curve Project, Innovation in Urban Freeway Reconstruction, with 51 registrants. The speakers discussing the project were Steve Mishler, PE, ADOT’s Design Manager and Paul Baca, PE, the Design Manager for the Broadway Curve Constructors.
The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project runs along 11 miles of Interstate 10 through the Phoenix metro area. This is a stretch of freeway that, on average, more than 300,000 vehicles pass through each weekday. Broadway Curve Constructors presented this exciting and challenging project that is being delivered under the Public-Private Partnership and Design-Build model for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

Happy Holidays YMF members!
We are having a virtual donation drive from November 25th to December 25th! We are raising funds for the Save the Family foundation. Donations will go to help families, veterans, and victims of domestic violence facing homelessness. Through donations, Save the Family can provide transitional housing, clothing, food, and everyday household items for families to get them off the streets.
Even though in person events are postponed until next year, we invite you to participate in this donation drive which will run for an entire month. Every little bit helps! More information to come on how to donate!
