Upcoming Events
Monthly Luncheons

The ASCE Broward Branch is working with the ASCE Palm Beach Branch and Speakers to set up presentations virtually to substitute our scheduled monthly luncheons. We are also working to have these presentations approved to allow for PDH's to be distributed. Please be on the lookout for more information and details on when these events will be taking place and how you can participate.
32nd Annual ASCE Bowl-A-Thon

The Bowlathon is an annual fundraiser that raises money for scholarships for those in our community pursing a degree in Civil Engineering. Teams participate from different companies throughout South Florida helping raise money to be given out in student scholarship. The Broward Branch will continue to monitor the current situation and remains hopeful this event will occur later this year.
FL Section Conference - Ft. Lauderdale
The FL Section Conference has been canceled due to COVID-19. The Conference was set to take place in Ft. Lauderdale from July 9th - 11th, 2020. The Florida Section Annual Conference brings over 30 technical and professional development sessions in 7 tracks of engineering: structural, geotechnical, environmental & water resources, transportation, utilities, sustainability and professional development. The FL Section is working to reschedule the Conference next year in Fort Lauderdale, July 2021.
Highlights of Past Events
December Luncheon - Coastal Resiliency
On December 4th, Jose Lopez of Bermello Ajamil & Partners discussed Coastal Resiliency. Mr Lopez's background includes water distribution, sewer and reclaimed water piping design and piping. He has experience in the design, installation, start-up and permitting of pump stations and sewer assessment. He also has experience in wetland permitting and mitigation, stormwater management and drainage. The Luncheon was held at the UF Hurricane House. Over 50 members were in attendance and one (1) PDH was provided.
Joint Society Holiday Party
The 2019 Joint Society Holiday Party was held at Funky Buddha in Oakland Park on Wednesday, December 18th, 2019. Five Broward Societies hosted the event including members from ASCE Broward, FES Broward, FWEA, FSAWWA, GCCITE, and SFWTS. All members were encouraged to bring can goods to the event to be collected and donated to the Pantry of Broward. The Holiday Party was a huge success with over 100 members attending.
January Luncheon - Construction Law Issues
On January 15th, Mark Young of AS-BUILT shared his background and knowledge on Construction Law Issues and the importance of Construction Law. A number of services offered by AS-BUILT include Construction Lawsuits, Construction Arbitrations, Construction Liens, Construction Bond Claims, Construction Bid Protests and Construction Mediations. Mr. Young is an attorney concentrating on construction and business law. The Luncheon was held at the UF Hurricane House. Over 50 members were in attendance and one (1) PDH was provided.
Multi-Region Leadership Conference
The ASCE Multi-Region Leadership Conference was held in Philadelphia from January 31st - February 1st. Our Treasurer, Robert Hubbard and our YMG Leader, Teresa Lewis were able to attend on behalf of the Broward Chapter. Both Robert and Teresa were able to engage with ASCE Members from around the country to understand how other chapters operate. They were able to bring back insight on how to better our chapter as a whole and improve our membership experience.
February Luncheon (Joint Luncheon with UESI) - The Art and Science of Surveying with LiDAR Technology
ASCE Broward teamed up with the Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) of Broward County for a joint luncheon on February 5th. The discussion was hosted by Todd Bates of KEITH and was focused on the Art and Science of surveying with LiDAR technology. Mr. Bates is a licensed professional Surveyor and Mapper in the State of Florida and has 19 years of experience in the Geospatial industry including Conventional Land Surveying, Geographic Surveying, Geodetic/GNSS and LiDAR applications. The Luncheon was held at the UF Hurricane House. Over 50 members were in attendance and one (1) PDH was provided.
2020 Engineer For A Day
The 4th Annual Engineer for a Day event took place on Wednesday, February 12th, 2020. The event was hosted at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 offices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The event was divided into two sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning session consisted of local engineering students, professors, and other professional engineers sharing their engineering experiences and how they have become the engineer that they are today. During the afternoon session, the students were split into smaller groups and toured local engineering firms. The ASCE Broward Branch would like to thank Jimmy Messick, P.E. for putting this successful event together. Jimmy has made it a priority to spearhead this event year after year allowing high school students interested in a civil engineering career the opportunity to experience a real engineering environment and gain a better understanding of what it takes to become a civil engineer.
March Luncheon - Flood Proofing Design
On March 4th, Paul Marcello of Floodproofing.com talked about Flood Proofing Design Options and the important role they play in designing a sustainable structure. Mr. Marcello shared his extensive knowledge on FEMA and building code flood regulations and how he was able to assist with both commercial and residential flood proofing designs. With a background of 100+ presentations promoting for flood resilience, Mr. Marcello has instructed architects, code officials, surveyors, builders, and home owners on best practices for flood mitigation.The Luncheon was held at the UF Hurricane House. Over 50 members were in attendance and one (1) PDH was provided.
