MARCH 2025

Dear Alexis,

I hope you're adjusting well after losing that hour of sleep over the weekend and are making the most of the extra hour of sunshine here in Central Florida!

February was an exciting month for our Branch and hopefully you were able to take part in any of the many events that were held for Engineers Week or attended one of the webinars that were hosted to help complete the professional development hours needed for those State of Florida Engineering licenses! Engineers Week closed with a spectacular banquet that showcased eight engineering organizations including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), Florida Engineering Society (FES), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), & WTS International (WTS). Each organization was able to present on their mission, current events, and highlight members by presenting awards for Collegiate Member of the Year, Technical Contribution Leader, Member of the Year, and Engineer of the Year. This year, our membership was represented by five of our outstanding contributors to the Society, and they were:

A huge thank you to the E-week planning committee! It’s great to see the banquet grow as it has over the past few years and everyone should save the date, next Engineers Week is February 22nd-28th, 2026!

There are plenty of events coming up over the next few months and be sure to sign up early for our 17th Annual Icebreaker happening May 22nd! Early registration tickets are available until March 25th and there are still plenty of opportunities to sponsor this amazing event that brings over 300 of us together at the Science Center benefiting student scholarships and education initiatives within our Branch! See below for more information on the Icebreaker and many other events offered by the Branch.

Lastly, hopefully you have seen the nomination form for our Annual Branch Awards! If you know anyone deserving of Engineer of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year, or Government Engineer of the Year or any projects that fit the descriptions provided for Project of the Year and Sustainable Project of the Year – please get your nominations in by March 22nd!

I hope you have a great month and can take some time to enjoy the beautiful weather and extra sunshine.

Keep shining,

Topic

Leveraging Green & Grey Infrastructure to Increase Resilience and Meet Project Goals

Date/Time

Thursday, March 27th, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Location

Central Florida Expressway Authority - 4974 ORL Tower Road Orlando, FL 32807

Description

Please join EWRI for a 1-hour technical presentation with speaker Jessica Bruso with Ferguson to learn about leveraging green and grey infrastructure to increase resilience and meet project goals. This presentation looks at green and grey infrastructure solutions including permeable surfaces, nutrient reducing filters, bioretention, and space-efficient subsurface storage solutions. It will include case studies of how these solutions have been implemented in Florida to address specific stormwater challenges such as flood mitigation and nutrient reduction. In many cases these green stormwater infrastructure installations add resilience by complementing existing grey infrastructure, alleviating current flooding, and cleaning the water that is discharging into our natural water bodies. This session is approved for 1.0 PDH per ASCE Florida Section.

Join us for our March 2025 Webinar featuring Dr. Stan Boyle presenting on: Words matter, Consistency matters, Engineering experience matters: Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall projects that went sideways on Monday, March 17, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

Dr. Boyle will discuss lessons from his experience performing forensic investigations of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall failures and working on legal cases related to MSE walls. These lessons include the necessity of engineers to use words appropriately and accurately; maintain consistency between the engineering performed, the specifications, and the drawings; and to engage engineers with appropriate experience to perform the analyses.

This webinar has been approved for 1 PDH.

The Sustainability Committee’s core mission and function are to organize and facilitate outreach opportunities, allowing the East Central Branch members to stay informed and promote sustainable engineering practices. Below are some upcoming events and other news recommended by the Committee.

Volunteer Opportunities

●      Central Florida RECON (CFR) Waterway Cleanup Fleet – CFR RECON is a group of friends and concerned citizens protecting Central Florida’s surface waters and natural environment by removing trash and debris from lakes, rivers, and streams. All those who enjoy canoeing and kayaking and would have a couple of hours are welcome to join upcoming events! The RECON fleet is growing and currently has 9 kayaks available to use at events. Shoreline volunteers are also welcome if you feel the urge to walk instead of being on the water. Click the link to check out upcoming events! Click here to view all RECON events on Meetup. Click here to view the Facebook page.

News / Interesting Reads

●      Rising temperatures drive the need for smarter windows: A thermochromic material painted on windows might be what we need to maximize energy efficiency and control costs. How is this material different from those used in previous smart windows? Click here to read the full article.

Join the Committee

If you would like to join the ECB Sustainability Committee, please reach out to our Committee Chair Steve Sommerfeldt. The committee typically meets (virtually) on the last Tuesday of the month during lunch to plan out future activities and ideas related to sustainability. We welcome any new and/or seasoned individuals interested.

March Monthly Report

February was a busy and productive month for ASCE. From career-focused sessions to insightful general body meetings, our members had numerous opportunities to engage with industry professionals and expand their knowledge. The month was kicked off with a resume review session hosted by the Younger Members Forum (YMF). Another professional development event we had was joined by KPM Franklin for a Land Development 101 session. Their presentation gave attendees a deeper understanding of the land development field. Additionally, we held 3 general body meetings this month with Ardurra, Poulos & Bennett, and FinFrock. Each company offered members a range of new information in the civil engineering, land development, and construction fields. E-week also took place this month! Students had the chance to teach and mentor the younger generation about civil engineering through hands-on projects. With Student Symposium right around the corner, the main focus this month was locking in to our competitions. Our dedicated teams have and continue to work diligently to prepare for their competitions. Looking ahead, we are beyond excited and proud to represent UCF in a diverse set of competitions this year!
