Greetings East Central Branch!

To say April isn't going as planned is a bit of an understatement. As we all do our part to limit the spread of the ongoing pandemic, many of the excellent events hosted by the Branch, Institutes and YMF that we look forward to in the coming months have been cancelled or postponed. This includes the IOA Corporate 5k Race (rescheduled to October), Central Florida Field Trip, East Central Branch Icebreaker (rescheduled to August), EWRI Seminar and ECB Beach Cleanup. We hope to reschedule all events for later in the year and we hope you get the chance to join us when things return to normal. In the meantime our Branch is changing gears and hopes to roll out several technical luncheons and social events via web conference in the coming weeks. Stay tuned and look out for the emails!

Please don't forget we are currently accepting nominations for the Florida Section Annual Awards (details below). In addition, the Branch and EWRI are also accepting applicants for our annual scholarship awards! These are great opportunities for both professional and student members and unfortunately a lot of us have some free time on our hands, so make sure to apply!

Stay healthy and wash those hands!

 Sincerely,

YMF Online Brown Bag Luncheon - Starting Up Your Own Engineering Firm

Date
4/28/2020

Have you ever wonder how entrepreneurs, CEO's, Innovators, or Idealists begin their journey?

Is it true that they were born with a divine nature talent or so called "one in a million talent" that is beyond spirit and hard work? Are they born with a never-ending resource of energy, passion, and ideas to create something disruptive in the industry?

Join us for our first Brown-bag luncheon series as we dive into the stories of some of the most successful engineers/entrepreneurs in our Engineering industry.

Speaker

Larry Madrid, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, President of Madrid CPWG Engineering Group, Past President Bartow Chamber of Commerce, Principal of Greeninovative Design, and Past GMEC 2013 Award, and many more....

In the school year that began fall of 1968 and ended in early June 1969, Larry was in his third grade of elementary school. That school year was highlighted by two Apollo missions which led up to Apollo 11 during his summer vacation, in July 1969. 20 years fast forward, Larry decided to apply to NASA for an astronaut position to fulfill his childhood dreams. Unfortunately, he didn't make the cut...

According to Larry, "Being rejected by NASA was my "greatest failure" But I let them know that it was 'great' because  I tried for greatness. I tried to make it into one of the most elite programs in the world. I tried to be part of a team of engineers and scientists who would and could literally change the course of humanity.  I tried greatly, and I've never once regretted it."

His life-story continues as he follows yet another passion of his life in the world of civil engineering. Today, Larry is the CEO of Madrid CPWG Engineering, an engineering group with more than 100+ professionals providing full engineering consulting services throughout Florida.

In lieu of our April and May service events, we want to encourage our members to consider donating needed supplies to a charity or organization of their choice. YMF will send a list of recommended organizations who are collecting supplies for various needs including animal shelters, healthcare workers, and families who are facing unemployment.

During our April virtual happy hour, you will have the opportunity to donate to an organization of your choice, much like you would bring a toy or food item to our regular community service happy hours, or you can donate at another time that is convenient for you.

If you are currently working with an organization that is providing COVID-19 relief and would like to have it included in the list, please reach out to Dayna at dduffy@inwoodinc.com by April 17th.

Student Members
The students here at the UCF Student Chapter were very excited to have been granted the opportunity to host the Southeast Student Conference at our campus this year. While it was unfortunately cut short due to public health concerns, that does not diminish our gratitude for all of the very hard work our Younger Members Forum put towards organizing the event and all participating schools put towards their competitions.

In the meantime, our chapter is currently focusing on selecting its new leaders and transitioning temporarily to effective remote operations so that our chapter doesn't miss a beat as we prepare for an outstanding 2020-2021 school year!
