This past January, East Central Branch was host to ASCE's Regions 1, 2, 4 and 5 Multi-Regional Leadership Conference. This multi-regional conference included the Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders (WSBL), the Eastern Region Younger Member Council (ERYMC), and the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders (WSCL). Nearly 450 ASCE members were in attendance during the 2-day conference including ASCE President Robin Kemper and Executive Director Tom Smith.

Multi-Regional Leadership Conference - Eastern Region Younger Member Council

Our very own Young Members Forum fund-raised and planned the event socials that included:

  • Thursday night social - Networking, appetizers, drinks, and WhirlyBall

  • Friday night social - A trip around the Orlando Eye, dinner at Lafayette's, and plenty of networking
Many thanks to Melissa Burns, Elias Rivera, Leah Fitzpatrick, Alex Hinkle, Thomas Anzelone, and Catherine Felter for not only planning the social events, assisting with the conference activities and sessions, but they were also the primary reasons ASCE selected East Central Branch to host this year's conference. They did a fantastic job representing East Central Branch.

Spotlight

The purpose of this section is to shine a "Spotlight" on volunteer members, within ECB, that are known to go out of their way, above and beyond expectations. This month's Spotlight is shining on Mr. Thomas Anzelone. Read below on how his involvement with ECB is making a difference.

Thomas Anzelone attended the University of C entral Florid a and stayed in
Thomas Anzelone
Orlando to work in the Transportation Department at RS&H. He has worked on many projects ranging from sidewalk/trails, widening projects, interchange improvements, emergency roadway reconstruction, and AET (All Electronic Tolling) implementation, to name a few.

Thomas has been involved with ASCE since his freshman year at UCF and attended 4 Southeast Student Conferences during that time. He became involved with the Younger Members Forum about a year after graduating and has held positions such as Central Florida Field Trip Chair, YMF Community Service Chair, YMF Vice President, and he is currently President of YMF and Chairing the PE Review Course. Thomas has also been on committees tasked with planning various events within ASCE including Florida Section Conference social events, the Eastern Region Younger Member Council, and the East Central Branch's Icebreaker event for the past few years. If that's not enough, Thomas has also recently involved himself with the branch's scholarship committee. When asked of what he loves most about his involvement with ASCE, he responded: "I love to meet new people through our ASCE events and give them a chance to get involved in any (or all) of the awesome events we are responsible for throughout the year."

When Thomas isn't working at RS&H or volunteering with ASCE, he enjoys spending time with his wife and working on their first home together that they recently moved into. Thomas also enjoys riding his bike and has been training for a 150-mile ride that is coming up soon.

Next time you see Thomas, please help us thank him for his outstanding service. Also, if you are aware of an ECB member deserving to be in the Spotlight, please let a branch officer know so they can be properly recognized in a future Spotlight.

The Importance of Stormwater Education in Florida

The importance of stormwater education in Florida can be summed up to... what works, what does not work, and lessons we should have learned.  For the past 20 years, the State of Florida has provided a course using "The Florida Stormwater Erosion and Sedimentation Control Inspectors Manual."  We will explore this educational program and the highlights of what does work, what does not work, and the many lessons we have learned during this time.

Speaker

Hal Lunsford, Lunsford Environmental, LLC

Hal Lunsford is a 40 year veteran environmentalist who recently retired from the Department of Environmental Protection in Tallahassee as the Statewide Training Coordinator in stormwater erosion and sedimentation control.

Hal has taught erosion and sediment control classes since 2000, has over 10 years of private sector experience in construction inspections, and is considered the leading expert in this field.
