Happy February East Central Branch!

One of the great benefits of volunteering on the Branch and Younger Member Forum Boards is that you get access to attend the annual ASCE Multi-Region Leadership Conference. This multi-regional conference offers leadership training for our Branch, Younger Member and Student Member Leadership. This year's Conference was hosted in Philadelphia and I'm told everyone not only learned something new but also had a great time as well!

On another note, the ASCE Southeast Student Conference is being host by UCF this year on March 12th to 14th. After months of preparation, students from 29 universities across the southeast region will put their engineering skills to the test and compete in Regional and National Competitions. We are looking for volunteers for events that will take place Thursday afternoon, and throughout the day Friday and Saturday. To make the event a success we need your help!

Please visit the website to find out more about the competitions before selecting where you would like to volunteer https://studentconferences.asce.org/southeast/competitions/

Cheers!

Sincerely,

NASA Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB)

On January 10, 2020 NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center became the third National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in the state of Florida. The dedication ceremony was the culmination of 3 years of work and coordination between the ASCE Florida Section and NASA. E-Week
Civil Engineers through our very occupation are instrumental to civilization. We are the designers and builders that create and maintain the infrastructure which is the backbone of a civilization. Yet, often our occupation disappears into the background of everyday life. Thus, in order to being the spotlight back onto civil engineers, the E-Week committee has coordinated with the Orlando Science Center for ASCE ECB to have an exhibit table during their Engineer's Weekend Celebration on February 22nd, from 11AM to 4PM, and will be divided into 2 hour slots. Please contact Michael Olka at [email protected] to volunteer at this event.

Also, this month the E-week committee is challenging all members to track their volunteer efforts for February. This will be used to show how Civil Engineers support our communities not just through our daily work but also through volunteering our time to support our youth, local communities, and the environment. The goal is to track at least 202.0 hours of volunteer service from ASCE ECB members. Please email your name, event, hours volunteered, and a brief (2-3 sentence) summary to Michael Olka, [email protected].
The hours will be totaled at the end of the month and the top 5 volunteers will receive gift cards for their service.

2020 Southeast Student Conference

On March 12-14, the University of Central Florida will host the 2020 Southeast Student Conference in Orlando. This event will draw about 1,000 students from 27 universities where they will compete in various engineering related competitions.

We're looking for professionals to volunteer their time and talents to judge and volunteer at these competitions. Judges are important to keep competitions fair as well as providing practical feedback to engineering students. No prior knowledge is needed to judge a competition. Visit the conference website for more information about the Southeast Conference and to find out how you can get involved!

Please Sponsor the 14th Annual Central Florida Field Trip!

The East Central Branch is hosting their 14th Annual Central Florida Field Trip on March 27th, 2020! Civil engineering students from five of Florida's Engineering Universities will visit exciting state-of-the-art engineering projects and existing facilities. Student Members
This past January, the ASCE-UCF Chapter held this year's annual Concrete Canoe Pour Day. Members came out to the workshop and got hands on experience in concrete mixing and pouring. This event is held to both help the team prepare their competing canoe as well as stimulate student's interests in civil engineering materials and ASCE involvement through first hand exposure to one of ASCE's largest projects. Concrete Canoe is just one of the many projects our chapter is working on as we prepare to host the Student Southeast Conference in March!
