Happy Holidays East Central Branch!
2019 was a busy and successful year for our Branch with over 50 social, technical and volunteer events held by our various Institutes, Committees and Younger Member Forum; including another great
Icebreaker Event and the revival of our
Annual Golf Tournament. In addition, our Branch was host to both the
ASCE Multi-Regional Leadership Conference and the
Florida Section Annual Conference. And as proof of our success, our Branch won the
Large Branch of the Year Award from the Florida Section. So congrats everyone on another fantastic year!
As you start to consider your New Year's resolution, I'd like to suggest getting more involved in your local ASCE Chapter! Whether it's attending one of our social events, technical luncheons or volunteer events or joining one of our many Committees there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved. And if you'd like to get started early, please join our Younger Member Forum for their annual
Toys for Tots Happy Hour at the Brass Tap on December 11th (flyer below)!
I hope everyone can take some time to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones and we'll talk again next year!
Cheers!
Sincerely,
Craig Ballock, P.E., M. ASCE

Eastin House
by Rocio Rodriguez
History & Heritage Chair
This house was constructed by
Joseph Woodnick in
1926. The original cost estimate of the house was
$4500!
It's a beautiful one-story cottage with some Colonial and Craftsman fancy exterior details. The windows for example, one of the most beautiful details of the house, have distinctive 9 over 1 Craftsman style panels. The wood modillion trims shown at the roof eave line on the west side of the house are another beautiful detail that gives this house a special look (see Figure 1).

Other Craftsman details include the projecting portico with gabled roof at the main entrance and the elliptical arch matching the sunburst design over the door frame. Under the projecting portico there are two oversized wood brackets rafter tails shaped with several curve cuts (see Figure 2).

|
Joseph, who was a well-known builder of fine homes in this area, constructed the house originally for himself, but it seems that he never lived there. The house was owned for 15 years by the Dibble family, before the Taylor family bought it in 1969.
An interesting fact of this historic structure is that this house is shown on the
Ron Howard movie "Parenthood" (See Figure 3). The distinctive style of this house, which was very popular nationwide in the 1920's, seems to have been a key factor into choosing this setting for the movie (the distinctive front door was later installed on the exterior set built at Universal Studios).
The house was added to the Historic Landmark list of Orlando City on June 13, 2005.
