Spotlight
The purpose of this section is to shine a "Spotlight" on volunteer members, within ECB, that are known to go out of their way, above and beyond expectations. This month's Spotlight is shining on Mr. Brent Schademan. Read below on how his involvement with ECB is making a difference.

Brent Schademan
Mr. Brent Schademan's construction experience is a wide array of projects spanning both horizontal and vertical: master roadway expansions, parking garages, office buildings, residential neighborhood developments, parks, and tenant improvement projects. Most of his career is in design and construction management from the Owner's side. Brent currently works at Tavistock. As a diversified real estate firm, Tavistock specializes in planning, design, finance, construction, development and experiences that have shaped the Florida landscape with a portfolio of groundbreaking projects highlighted by the master-planned community of Lake Nona.

Brent became involved in the ASCE Construction Institu
te (CI) group around 5-years ago. He has facilitated the setups for lunch and learn tours around Orlando to show case vertical projects under construction: parking garages, mix used buildings, apartments, and office buildings. Thus, inviting and mentoring anyone who wants to listen on types of construction, means and methods, and particulars of the individual projects. Brent has been fortunate enough to also volunteer on tours that were setup by others. Additionally, Brent has spent time with UCF ASCE Student Chapter council helping them plan, price, and conceptually design certain elements of a new steel building at the UCF Campus. One of Brent's goals with ASCE CIisto facilitate access to construction projects for learning opportunities -engineers,designers, and construction managers alike. "We can impart a great deal of knowledge and impact future designs and construction based on what's happening in today's time".

Next time you see
Brent, please help us thank him for his outstanding service. Also, if you are aware of an ECB member deserving to be in the Spotlight, please let a branch officer know so they can be properly recognized in a future Spotlight.

Volusia Resident to vote on half-cent sales surtax in May

Volusia County is set to vote on a half-cent sales tax increase to fund local infrastructure projects.

The tax would bring the total sales tax in Volusia County to seven cents per dollar. The latest half-cent would be used to support the $1.6 Billion dollars in needed infrastructure projects. According to Ed Kelly, Chairman of the Volusia County Council, the tax is expected to bring $45 Million dollars in added tax revenue to the area annually.

Atlantic Coastline Station

By Rocío Rodríguez
History and Heritage Chair

The Atlantic Coastline Station was designed in 1926 by architect M.A. Griffith, who was inspired by the Spanish architecture and colonial parish churches he visited during his travels along the Pacific Coastline. The arches, parapets, and twin bell towers among other details in this station, show the typical mission style ( Figures 1 and 2). The platform shown in Figure 3, features arches that resemble the Mission-Style architecture of the station's canopy. The Atlantic Coastline Station was built as a city effort to attract tourism in the Orlando area during the 1920's land boom. In 1978, it was designated as an Orlando Historic Landmark. In 2014, extensive renovations took place due to deterioration after years of operation. Cosmetic and structural repairs were needed to bring the structure back to code. The station serves Amtrak's Silver Meteor and Silver Star Lines, and the Sunrail commuter train.
