July marks the month for one of the Branch's biggest events, the
Annual Icebreaker at Orlando Science Center (this week on Thursday, July 11th). Proceeds from the event support the Branch's many outreach activities as well as several student scholarships. Last years' Icebreaker funded
six $1,000 student scholarships for engineering students. In addition to supporting a great cause, the
Younger Members Forum (YMF) has also planned a fun evening of networking including food, drinks, games, and many raffle prizes. There are still some tickets available, so I encourage you to get yours today (see details in newsletter below). I hope to see you there!

The purpose of this section is to shine a "Spotlight" on volunteer members, within ECB, that are known to go out of their way, above and beyond expectations. This month's Spotlight is shining on Ms. Catherine Felter. Read below on how her involvement with ECB is making a difference.

Catherine Felter |
A Central Florida native and University of Central Florida graduate, Catherine Felter is dedicated to fostering the engineering profession with students. She has been involved with ASCE since her third year at UCF, where she served as Vice President, and attended many Southeast Student events and leadership conferences.
Shortly after graduating from UCF, Catherine joined the Younger Members Forum, holding the YMF Community Service Chair position for the last two years. She created and organized the YMF Cornhole Tournament, donating $500 to Give Kids the World two years in a row. She also assisted with other community service events. In January, Catherine received the "Outstanding Younger Member in Community Activities" award for the Eastern Region in recognition for her efforts.
Currently, Catherine serves as the Icebreaker Chair and has increased the number of student scholarships presented by the ECB. She also coached an Odyssey of the Mind team of seven fifth-graders, who won fifth place at the regional level. Furthermore, she is the Chair for the ASCE Southeast Student Conference, which will be hosted by UCF in March 2020.
"My life experiences made me want to be an engineer," Catherine said. "Teaching younger students to visualize themselves in the engineering profession and empower them to pursue their dreams is very rewarding."
Catherine is now a member of the Land Development team at VHB where she works on projects ranging from residential and commercial to various mixed-use sites. She recently passed the Professional Engineering exam and is expected to receive her PE license in September.

Review of Proposed Changes to Orange County Code
Orange County has reached out to ECB for input on proposed changes to their ADA codes (see below links and brief descriptions).
This document presents Public Works' draft amendments to Orange County Code to address Public Works administrative needs by updating Ch. 16, Ch. 21, Ch. 30, and Ch. 34. The project's working group, small-group meetings with Public Works staff, and other staff discussions (including Environmental Protection Division) all were integral to the development of draft revisions.
Draft Orange County Code Amendments for Pedestrian Safety and ADA Needs
To help implement Orange County's Sustainability Plan, Walk - Ride - Thrive! pedestrian safety program, and ADA Transition Plan, this document presents Public Works' draft amendments to Orange County Code sections to address pedestrian safety and ADA needs. The project's Sustainability Plan Tasks working group, Pedestrian Safety Issues List, ADA Issues List, small-group meetings with additional Division staff (Development Engineering, Zoning, Planning) to review potential changes, and other staff discussions (including Roads and Drainage) all were integral to the development of draft revisions. Revisions are proposed to Ch. 9, Ch. 21, Ch. 30, Ch. 34, and Ch. 38.

Career Awareness Student Expo

Orange Technical College - Mid Florida Campus
Opportunities in engineering and information technology are projected to grow exponentially faster than the average for all occupations from 2019 to 2026. Because of this exponential growth, there is an urgent need to address the skills gap, as not enough college graduates are filling open jobs and traditional education isn't able to keep up with these fast-paced STEM industries. NAF academies in Central Florida high schools seek to address the skills gap and increase the talent pipeline.
We invite you to help us shape your future workforce. We hope you'll consider joining us for our 2nd NAF Academies of Engineering and Information Technology Career Expo to be held October 25th, 2019. This will be a valuable student experience allowing professionals to interact with students in industry-focused academies. We have several ways that you can impact 400 students from Orange and Seminole counties: classroom experience, tradeshow presenter, panelist and sponsor.
For the classroom experience, we are asking that you do a 20-minute presentation or hands-on experience to be repeated at least three times. Two companies will be paired in each classroom to expose students to as many companies as possible.
We ask tradeshow presenters to provide an activity, a device demonstration or a challenge that will engage students.
The panel will consist of 4-6 speakers from higher education and business. Last year this session was a fan favorite.

ASCE UCF wants to congratulate UF on their win at the 2019 National Concrete Canoe Competition. We look forward to competing alongside everyone at the 2020 Southeast Student Conference!
This month, ASCE UCF kicked off our tabling events at freshman orientation. Starting college can be a very overwhelming experience, and ASCE UCF wants to help all incoming students feel as comfortable as possible. So far, our officers have attended 10 orientation sessions; greeting everyone with a big smile and introduce them not only to the ASCE club, but the ASCE family.
Additionally, ASCE UCF has been in touch with surrounding schools regarding giving presentations to prospective civil engineering students. The goals of these presentations are to inform them about the profession of civil engineering, the steps they need to take to get there, and how ASCE can be a huge asset to success in engineering. We hope to make these presentations a regular event and get as many of our officers involved as we can.

Senior Roadway Engineer - Florida PE with 10+ years of Experience
AIM is seeking a Senior PE with a strong technical focus in Roadway Design to lead roadway design efforts in our Orlando Office. Position will include mentoring of staff, overseeing the roadway design component for the majority of our FDOT and municipal roadway projects, quality control and technical support for our project managers.
The duties of this position include preparing detailed engineering designs and overseeing the work of junior project engineers in preparing plans for roadway and drainage design work using FDOT and/or AASHTO standards. Must be able to promote an all-inclusive approach to working in the team environment. Along with design, this position will also be responsible for preparing and overseeing the preparation of Plans, Specifications and Estimates. This position may assist in the management of larger projects or manage smaller projects that involve preparing scopes, schedules and budgets and include the following management work elements: day to day communication (verbal and written) with client, support and advise junior engineers and technical staff, act in an advisory capacity to senior management on engineering related matters, write reports and technical memos and coordinate with sub-consultants.

Senior Structural Engineer - Atlanta Georgia
Primary responsibilities include:
* Demonstrated a strong technical ability in all aspects of bridge design and plans preparation with a proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation platforms.
* Project experience to include a wide variety of bridge types ranging from medium span concrete bridges to more complex steel plate and steel box girder bridges.

Roadway Design Engineer to plan, design, organize and recommend roadway design solutions for Florida DOT and municipal roadway improvement projects. Assignments may include a diverse variety of transportation-related projects such as new alignment, widening, milling and resurfacing, bicycle & pedestrian, highway safety, intersection, interchange and design-build projects across all phases of a project life from advanced planning to final design.
Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to) the following:
* Provide engineering design services for transportation improvements projects in Florida.
* Design and produce construction details, plans, specifications and estimates including detailed engineering calculations.
