Spotlight
The purpose of this section is to shine a "Spotlight" on volunteer members, within ECB, that are known to go out of their way, above and beyond expectations. January's Spotlight is shining on Mr. Elias Jammal. Read below on how his involvement with ECB is making a difference.

Elias Jammal graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He just recently celebrated his 20-year work anniversary having worked with essentially the same company, Terracon (formerly Nodarse) for all those years. In his career, he has mostly worked as a geotechnical engineering consultant on public sector/transportation projects.

He has been a volunteer on the Geo-Institute committee for a number of years now and finds it to be a challenging but also gratifying experience. The challenges include consistently being able to arrange for technical luncheons or events with the other committee members; but it's been very gratifying to be able to raise money from the luncheons and award scholarships to local college students. In the last 4 years Elias has been part of organizing 24 technical luncheons that have each attracted anywhere from 15 to 55 attendees. In the last 2 years alone, the proceeds from the luncheons has allowed the Geo-Institute to award $2,500 in scholarships.

Elias is also proud of the fact that the ECB Geo-Institute was selected to be one of the host locations for the prestigious Cross-USA Lecture Tour. This year's presenter is Dr. Paul Mayne, P.E. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the event will be held at the UCF Alumni Center on Thursday, January 31st starting at 6pm. Look for further details below.

Next time you see Elias, please help us thank him for his outstanding service. Also, if you are aware of an ECB member deserving to be in the Spotlight, please let a branch officer know so they can be properly recognized in a future Spotlight.

Geo-Institute
Cross-USA Lecture: "Evaluation of Axial Pile Response for Load-Displacement-Capacity and Load Transfer Using Seismic Piezocone Tests" presented by Dr. Paul Mayne, PhD, P.E.

Please join us for the Geo-Institute's Cross-USA Lecture tour stop in Central Florida. The ASCE's Geo-Institute provides the Cross-USA Lecture Tour to local G-I chapters as an ongoing program to enhance the prestige of the geoprofession. Each year a distinguished geoprofessional is selected to deliver the lecture at selected locations across the USA. This year's lecturer is Dr. Paul Mayne, PhD, P.E. from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The event will take place at the University of Central Florida Fairwinds Alumni Center on Thursday January 31st, 2019. A social/cocktail hour will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 pm followed by dinner and lecture presentation from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. All professionals and college strudents from the Central Florida area are invited to attend. Please read below for addtional event information.

PRESENTATION TOPIC

For deep foundations, cone penetrometer (CPT) and piezocone (CPTu) data can be used in either traditional bearing capacity solutions via interpreted geoparameters, or alternatively with direct-CPT methods that scale the measured cone tip resistance and sleeve friction to unit end and unit side resistances of the full-scale pile foundation. A Modified Unicone Method is presented based on 330 pile load tests, compared with 105 load tests for the original Unicone Method.  With seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu), the small-strain stiffness (G0) is obtained from the shear wave velocity measurement.  A modulus reduction curve can be expressed in terms of the mobilized load (Q/Qult) which is in essence, the factor of safety.   Introducing closed-form elastic solutions for axial pile displacement and load-transfer with depth, the use of SCPTu permits a construction of the load-displacement-capacity curves and axial load distribution for driven, jacked, and drilled pile foundations. Case studies from South Carolina, Georgia, British Columbia, Texas, Alabama, and Alberta are presented.
