On January 16, 2025, the Younger Member Group hosted their third event of the year: Raise the Bar at Beat Culture Brewery & Kitchen. YMG had the pleasure of having Mr. Joe Gomez (Assistant City Manager of Infrastructure & Operations at City of Coral Gables) and Mr. Todd Hendrix (Chief Operating Officer of Architecture & Engineering Services at CPH Consulting, LLC) speak about their involvement in the public and private sectors, leadership skills, networking advancement, and how they ultimately “raised the bar” in their careers. Amongst the various industry professionals and younger members at the event, there were countless networking opportunities and various appetizers offered.

Do & Don’ts of Public Interactions & Hosting Public Meetings

On January 28, 2025, our Government Relations Committee hosted an insightful webinar, "Do & Don'ts of Public Interactions & Hosting Public Meetings".

Our distinguished speakers shared insights to running impactful public meetings, whether virtual, in-person, or hybrid. From engaging stakeholders and handling challenging situations to mastering effective communication and seamless meeting organization, this session provided practical tools to foster collaboration and build stronger connections with any audience.

EWRI / EWB-FL PDH Happy Hour and Hobas Pipes Presentation

The Environment and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) hosted a happy hour and continuing education presentation in partnership with the Florida Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-FL). A portion of the proceeds of registration are going to the EWB-FL Nepal Water Supply Project, which involves the design and construction of a water supply/distribution system in the village of Khabari, Nepal.

The Hobas Pipes presentation was an introduction to fiberglass pipe in gravity and pressure systems. It covered design of the product, applications and installations. Fiberglass pipes offer inherently corrosion-resistant solutions with structural strength across water, sewer, and stormwater systems using various installation methods, including sliplining, two-pass tunnel lining, microtunneling and direct bury.

CI/SEI Networking Social

On February 6th, 2025 the Construction Institute (CI) and Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) hosted a joint networking event at The Doral Yard. This event had attendees from not only the construction and structural industry, but also geotechnical and transportation engineers were also in the attendance. We had a good number of students that came out to learn and network with both institutes. Tickets included many appetizer options and drinks.

Field Day

On March 15, 2025, the ASCE Miami-Dade Branch hosted their annual Scholarship Fundraiser -  Field Day: Jumanji Safari Challenge at Zoo Miami. Over 500 attendees joined the Miami-Dade Branch with their respective companies to participate in small challenges in the general round and in the knockout rounds to ultimately crown the Ruler of the Safari, which was awarded to BCC Engineering/Parsons as they won the Volleyball final. Congratulations to the rest of the top four companies, 2nd Place (EXP), 3rd Place (CPH), and 4th Place (Ardurra). Congratulations to the raffle winners and scholarship winners, which included four college students and two high school students. The event this year had a snow cone machine, cotton candy machine, unlimited refreshments, great music, and countless networking opportunities. The Branch also had the 2025 ASCE Society President, Feniosky Pena-Mora, and the 2026 ASCE Society President-Elect Nominee, Carol Haddock, in attendance. Mr. Pena-Mora spoke at the event along with the Branch President, Field Day Chair, and Field Day Advisor, and Field Day Chair-Candidates. Huge thanks to all the volunteers and committee members, as well as all the sponsors, for their support of the Miami-Dade Branch. The Branch had over 35 companies, with 25 of those companies being sponsors, in attendance.

ASCE Bridge Competition



The ASCE Miami Dade Branch successfully hosted the local 2025 Bridge Competition at the MDC Youth Fair Grounds.

There was a total of 20 students who participated and showcased their incredible talent. Parents and teachers were also in attendance to support and encourage the students during the competition. As always, our gratitude goes out to MDCPS with Pamela Lopez who was instrumental to getting the students to participate in the preliminary round and to get them to the final local competition, and the Youth Fair for their unwavering support and for providing a fantastic venue for the competition.

After a preliminary round involving all MDC Public Schools, 10 high school students and 10 middle school students gathered at the Youth Fair grounds to design a low-cost bridge using the US Military Academy's computer bridge design software.

We are thrilled to announce this year's 1st place winners who will advance to compete in the ASCE FL Section state competition: Luis Galino from Miami Coral Park High School and Danny Ramirez from Bowman Ashe Doolin K-8 Academy.

Awards were given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for both the high school and middle school winners and well as their respective teachers.

ASCE T&DI Webinar Series: Navigating Transit & Freight



On Friday, March 21, 2025, ASCE Miami-Dade’s Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) launched the first session in its webinar series, offering valuable insights into key topics in transportation engineering. This virtual event, titled Navigating Transit & Freight, featured distinguished speakers and provided attendees with the opportunity to earn 1 PDH credit.

Sean Adgerson, Deputy Director & COO of Miami-Dade DTPW, delved into the history, significance, and challenges of Miami-Dade’s transit systems, shedding light on their evolving role in the region’s mobility landscape. Meanwhile, Daniel Lameck, Freight & Federal Grants Coordinator at FDOT District 6, presented an overview of FDOT’s freight initiatives, discussing future plans aimed at enhancing mobility and infrastructure.

This webinar provided exclusive insights from industry leaders, equipping attendees with a deeper understanding of the transportation challenges and opportunities shaping the future of Miami-Dade and beyond.

Joint Society Bike Ride

In celebration of Florida Bike Month, the professional organizations of South Florida ITE, South Florida WTS, Palm Beach FES, Broward ASCE, and Miami-Dade ASCE came together to host an engaging and informative bike ride through downtown West Palm Beach.

The 5-mile route showcased recent pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure projects, offering participants a firsthand look at the city's efforts to enhance mobility and safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Approximately 15 attendees gathered at the West Palm Beach Brightline Station, where those without bikes had the convenient option of renting one.

The event provided a perfect blend of networking, education, and outdoor fun, allowing professionals to experience infrastructure improvements while enjoying a scenic and leisurely ride through the heart of West Palm Beach.

SECME Olympiad

The ASCE Miami-Dade Branch Younger Member Group (YMG) proudly participated in the Girl Scouts of the USA STEM Camp, organizing and facilitating three engaging hands-on activities for the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida. These activities were designed to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and a passion for engineering among young participants. The challenges included the Windy Tower Challenge, which tested structural stability under simulated hurricane conditions; Pasta and Straw Bridge Building, which introduced the fundamentals of load-bearing structures; and Chain Purse from a Cookie Box, which encouraged innovative thinking by turning everyday materials into functional designs. The event was a resounding success, with the Girl Scouts enthusiastically tackling each challenge and demonstrating their potential as future engineers. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the dedicated volunteers who helped make this event possible and contributed to empowering more young women to explore careers in STEM.

ASCE Miami-Dade Branch BOD and YMG leadership attended the ASCE 2025 Multi-Region Leadership Conference (MRLC), held from January 31 to February 1, 2025, at the Hilton Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. The conference was a successful gathering of civil engineering leaders, students, and young professionals from Regions 1, 2, 4, and 5. The conference aimed to provide attendees with knowledge of the Society and their respective Regions, opportunities to interact with various members, and personal leadership skills development, emphasizing the importance of networking.
