We are excited to announce the June 2018 ASCE Seattle Section meeting. Please join us for a fun evening with friends and colleagues!
The Local Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (LOCEA) Awards recognize projects that have improved the quality of life and contributed to the economic development of the local community, area, or region. These projects represent the successful combination of multiple engineering objectives, including design innovation and excellence, environmental sustainability, cost effectiveness, the effective use of materials, and aesthetics.
The ASCE Seattle Section has chosen five projects to receive the 2018 Local Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Awards:

June President's Column

June always brings us many reasons to celebrate and look forward to envision a bright future: we celebrate our most outstanding local engineering projects and select our leadership for next year.
The difference the Seattle Section makes in our community is made possible through the dedication of a core of volunteers that make up our board of directors, committee chairs, YMF leaders, and event organizers. It inspires me to see that they always find a way to contribute time to the community through ASCE, no matter how hectic their personal and professional lives are.
Over the proverbial summer break in July and August, the board members will be busy planning next year’s events, establishing the budget and finding new volunteers for the positions that have opened up. If you find yourself missing the membership dinner meetings, I encourage you to volunteer for other efforts of the Section. Some great ways to stay engaged are by:
- contacting a committee chairperson and asking how you can participate;
- becoming a key contact and reaching out to our government on important infrastructure issues;
- reaching out to leaders in ASCE who are establishing the strategic initiatives and broad goals of the civil engineering profession; or
- joining a technical institute to further develop of the state of the art in your field of practice.
Regardless of where you choose to dedicate your volunteering this summer, I can assure you the time you invest will enrich someone else’s life and that is time well spent. In addition to the enrichment you will bring to others, studies have shown that volunteering also contributes positively to one’s health and well-being in the long run. Selflessly or selfishly, I hope you will be magnanimous with your volunteering time this summer and into the future.
In July, I will also be sending out a feedback form where you can leave us comments, thoughts, and suggestions for next year. You can always email me with any feedback or questions you may have at any time during the year, but the feedback form will have some more specific questions that will help us plan for next year. Your opinions will be highly valued!
Don’t forget to register for our LOCEA Awards Dinner and to vote for your representation on the Seattle Section Board.

Delivering the
Dream to Local Schools
|
|
ASCE members have embraced Dream Big: Engineering Our World since the premiere night more than a year ago.
They’ve hosted viewing parties for the giant-screen film. They’ve hosted community events, connecting students to civil engineering role models. They’ve hosted outreach programs, complete with hands-on activities and lessons related to the movie.
In short, Society members and Dream Big are inspiring an entire generation to get excited about the potential of engineering careers.
So as Dream Big enters a new phase of outreach, it should not surprise anyone that members are again seizing the initiative. The Society has a new goal for 2018: placing a DVD copy of the acclaimed documentary in every U.S. public school.

YMF Summer Picnic and Elections

May Student Presentations Recap
|
|
On May 8, ASCE Seattle joined the University of Washington and Seattle University for student presentations. Both schools held competitions for students, teams, clubs, etc. to present their work to a panel of judges. The winning team from each school presented at the section meeting.
The presentations gave students in the civil and environmental engineering department an opportunity to showcase their work.

Washington State Report Card
We are gaining momentum in updating the report card. In December the ASCE Seattle Section was awarded a State Public Affairs Grant (SPAG) to help fund our report card undertaking.
Volunteers are needed for developing our report card in the following categories:
- Solid & Hazardous Waste
- Transit
- Dams

Legislative Committee
ASCE Seattle Section is searching for volunteers to assist with the Legislative Affairs Committee. The level of Involvement can vary and and can include providing engineering judgement on current legislative issues to assisting with lobbying.

The Legislative Committee functions in the political arena. The committee can become active in federal, state, county or other governmental issues that are of interest to the profession (such as university engineering budget considerations, issues that affect the practice of or employment of civil engineers, and environmental issues of significance to the profession). The committee is responsible for disseminating information from the AELC pertaining to state legislation. In recent years, the chair of the Legislative Committee has also been the AELC representative. If they are different, the Legislative Committee chair is an alternate to the AELC and shall be responsible for keeping abreast of current activities of the AELC.

Michael Harney for Director of Standing Committees
Michael Harney, P.E., P.Eng., ENV SP, M.ASCE, began his career as a geotechnical engineer in the Seattle area in 1999, and is privileged to have been with Shannon & Wilson since 2006, where he is currently a Senior Associate. He was raised and educated in Indiana (Purdue, 1998) and moved to Seattle for graduate school (University of Washington, 2000). At the UW, he organized, founded, and served as the first president of the Geo-Institute Graduate Student Society, which ultimately became one of the first Geo-Institute student chapters in the nation. A five-year Board member (2003-2008) and past-president of the ASCE Seattle Section Geotechnical Group (Seattle Geo-Institute chapter), he was influential in the establishment of the Robert D. Holtz Graduate Fellowship at the University of Washington and was the Chair of the Group’s 2006 Spring Seminar on “Soft Ground Engineering” which attracted more than 300 attendees and 30 exhibitors. Following his tenure with the Geotechnical Group, Mr. Harney served on the Seattle Section Board for five years, holding the positions of Secretary (2009-2011) and Director of Branches (2011-2014). He has also been active on national-level committees of the Transportation Research Board and the Geo-Institute.
Mr. Harney’s technical experience encompasses most facets of geotechnical engineering, with particular emphasis on site characterization and soil property estimation, soil improvement and geosynthetics design, and slope stabilization and risk assessment. He has been involved in a variety of diverse civil engineering projects, including highway and rail transportation, water and wastewater infrastructure, hydropower dams and facilities, U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ facilities, and a United States Department of Energy nuclear power facility. During his tenure at the University of Washington, he was the solely-responsible instructor for several courses over six years, including undergraduate courses in soil mechanics, experimental soil mechanics, and foundation design, and graduate courses in lateral earth pressures and retaining structures. At Shannon & Wilson, he has served on office-level and board-level committees, and has led a group of geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists in the Seattle Office for two years. His research on geotechnical site characterization, ground improvement, geosynthetics, and soil behavior has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and at several peer-reviewed technical conferences.

Katie Sultani-Wright for Treasurer
Katie Sultani-Wright is a senior engineer at Glosten, a full-service marine consulting firm located in Seattle, Washington. She has 15 years of experience in ocean engineering and naval architecture. Her areas of specialization include mooring analysis, marine climatology, and statistical analysis. Katie is an effective and accomplished project manager, with responsibility for significant design and analysis projects involving numerous stakeholders.
Katie has been co-chair of the ASCE
Seattle Section
House and Hospitality Committee since 2015. She enjoys being an active part of the engineering community at large. Building and maintaining a community of peers is an important part of her life. Katie will bring her enthusiasm for project management, a good business sense, and technical skills to the Treasurer role. She is proud to be a part of ASCE Seattle Section leadership and hopes to continue to serve as Treasurer.
Katie earned her BSE and MSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. She is a registered professional engineer in Washington and Alaska. Katie recently completed the Certificate Program in Technical Communication at UW.

Henry Haselton for President Elect
Henry Haselton is a civil engineer with expertise in geotechnical engineering and project management. Throughout his 26-year-long career in the Seattle area, Henry has served public and private sector clients on public infrastructure, private development, ecosystem restoration and geologic hazard projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. Aside from providing specialty geotechnical engineering services, Henry uses his skills as a certified Project Management Professional to guide multi-disciplinary project teams to successful outcomes while answering to broad groups of stakeholders. Henry is a Principal Engineer and owner of Aspect Consulting (Aspect), where he leads the company’s Infrastructure practice and manages a range of multi-disciplinary projects across the company’s practices.
Henry holds a MSCE in Geotechnical Engineering and a BSCE in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington. Prior to his position at Aspect, Henry worked at Tetra Tech and in the City of Seattle’s Engineering Services Branch. His experience in a large public agency and consulting firms ranging from small local consultancies to a large, publicly-traded international engineering firm gives him a unique understanding of project objectives and mindsets and risk tolerance from different perspectives. These experiences, combined with his current role as owner and practice lead at Aspect, give Henry a strong foundation for leadership in our industry.
Henry has enjoyed being part of ASCE since he was a civil engineering student almost 30 years ago. He was active in the UW Student Chapter, YMF, the Geotechnical Group, the 2012 Infrastructure Report Card and for the last two years has been the Seattle Section Program Co-Chair. His volunteer work has also included committee positions with APWA and working with All Hands Volunteers on providing pro bono engineering services to help rebuild and protect schools, villages, and farms affected by natural disasters in Nepal and Tanzania.
Henry is proud to be a civil engineer and excited about giving back to the profession and ASCE for the rewarding experiences and opportunities they have presented throughout his career here in Seattle. Civil engineers have a lot to offer communities as leaders. Henry is excited to pursue the President-Elect position with the ASCE Seattle Section with a mission to expand the engagement of its members beyond their workplace, encourage engineers to take on leadership positions in our community, and to mentor the next generation of civil engineering leaders in our community.
